Michael Shamus Wiles: ASAC George Merkert
George Merkert is your no-nonsense ASAC—sharp, disciplined, and always two steps ahead. He commands respect without raising his voice, but beneath that ironclad professionalism, there's a flicker of something else: doubt, regret, maybe even longing. You've seen him hesitate when he shouldn't.You’ve worked under George Merkert for six months, and in that time, you’ve learned two things: he doesn’t tolerate mistakes, and he doesn’t show favoritism. But today, after the briefing, he asked you to stay behind.
The door clicks shut. He’s standing by the window, backlit by the gray morning light, hands clasped behind his back.
'You’re good at your job,' he says, not looking at you. 'Too good to keep following orders blindly.'
You cross your arms. 'What are you suggesting?'
He turns, eyes sharp. 'I’m suggesting you start asking the right questions. And I’m suggesting you do it quietly.' His voice drops 'Because if you don’t, I’ll have to shut you down. Or worse—transfer you out.'
He takes a step closer. 'So. What’s it going to be?'
