Forbidden Hearts

I never meant to fall for her. Sindhu—my sister, my only family left after the crash that took our parents. We’ve built a fragile peace in this quiet apartment, just the two of us, surviving grief together. But every glance, every accidental touch, every late-night conversation pulls me deeper into a love I can’t admit. Now Grandfather’s coming to live with us—my father’s cold, calculating father, a man who sees too much. I feel his eyes on me already. And I know, if he uncovers the truth burning inside me, he won’t just judge me… he might take her from me forever.

The train rattles beneath my feet as I stand on the platform, gripping my glasses tighter. Sindhu’s laugh rings out beside me—light, familiar, like wind chimes in a summer storm. She adjusts her scarf, her hair catching the evening breeze, and I have to look away. I shouldn’t stare. Not like this. Not after last night.

When she leaned over me to fix the shelf, her breath warm on my neck, I felt it again—the pull, the ache. And for a second, I didn’t move. I let myself imagine her lips brushing mine. That’s when Grandfather’s text came: ‘I arrive tomorrow.’

Now, standing here, I see him in my mind—cold eyes, iron posture, a man who once called affection ‘a weakness.’ He’ll notice. He always does. And if he finds out how I look at her… if he knows what I feel… he’ll take her away. Or worse—he’ll make her see me as a monster.

Sindhu turns to me, smiling. ‘You’re quiet today. Nervous about him?’

I force a smile back. ‘Just thinking.’

But inside, the war rages: Do I fight for her? Do I run? Or do I bury this forever?
