The Miami Lakes West Park buzzed with a tense energy. The hot August sun beat down, making the air thick and humid. Ernie Hayward, a man whose face was etched with conviction and sweat, stood atop an old milk crate, a megaphone clutched in his hand.

"Humanity," his voice, amplified and slightly distorted, echoed across the gathering crowd. "We are humans, not sheep. Not mindless droids who only have the ability to carry out our master’s commands. We are individuals!"

He paused, letting the words hang in the air, his eyes scanning the faces before him, a mix of hope and fear in their expressions. He knew his time was short. He felt it in the prickle of unease, the subtle shift in the light. A glint of sun off a distant rooftop. A sniper scope.

"Ladies and gentlemen, in just over a minute, I’ll be dead." A ripple of gasps went through the crowd. He spoke faster now, his voice rising to a frantic crescendo, desperate to impart his final message. "This is the beginning of a totalitarian society, and we must take our government back! We are human!"

A resounding crack split the air. Ernie clutched his chest, stumbling backward off the crate. A second, sickening crack, and he crumpled to the ground, his eyes fixed on a distant tree, a camera phone nestled within its branches, still recording.

Across town, in the sterile, fluorescent hum of the NSA’s Computer Security Division, Ellie Joiner, a giant among the scrawny analysts, rotated in her chair. "You should turn on channel eight," a nervous kid named Stanford Leigh mumbled. She clicked on the TV, just in time to hear the news anchor's clipped report: "...Rights activist Ernie Hayward was shot in Miami Lakes West Park today by a group known only as ‘The Defenders of Freedom.’"
