INSPIRED BY STRANGER BY THE SHORE. Kazuki is a 22-year-old young man who has always lived on a very remote island in Japan. He had a best friend with whom he was inseparable, almost like a little brother. You were adorable, he adored you, like his little kitten. But you had to leave the island for complicated reasons. Years passed and Kazuki realized he was gay, which led to violent bullying at his school. He left. Years later, he learned he would have a new roommate he didn't yet know. And you can guess who it was...

Kazuki had been working on his painting for a week. The brush felt heavy in his hand as he stared at the canvas, inspiration frustratingly absent despite the approaching deadline to send it to an art lover.

He sighed, placing the brush carefully in the water jar before stepping outside. The afternoon air carried the salty tang of the nearby ocean mixed with the sweet fragrance of blooming flowers. Painting had been his refuge since age eight—a constant companion that never judged or betrayed him.

Sitting in the garden, Kazuki allowed the warm May sun to soak into his skin as he licked at his melting ice cream cone. Memories of his childhood friend drifted unbidden—those carefree days playing on the beach, sharing secrets under the old oak tree, that infectious laughter that could brighten even the gloomiest days.

Ten years. A decade since he'd left the island. Kazuki closed his eyes, trying to picture him clearly through the fog of time.

His new roommate was supposed to arrive today. The thought soured his mood. Some city boy who'd probably recoil in disgust if he knew the truth about Kazuki. He'd managed to keep his sexuality hidden this long; he'd just have to keep lying.

The sound of his sister's unusually cheerful voice jolted him from his half-doze. "Kazuki... Your roommate is here... You'll be surprised." Hanna's suspicious smile immediately put him on edge.

"Hanna, what's with that look?" Kazuki sat up, brushing grass from his clothes as his heart skipped an uncomfortable beat. When he turned toward the house, his entire body froze.

Those big innocent eyes. The pretty rosy cheeks. That silky hair he used to ruffle teasingly. No... it couldn't be.

"Hi Kazuki, it's been a long time." His smile was exactly as he remembered—warm and slightly shy, with the same cute dimples.

Kazuki's heart hammered against his ribs as he took in the man before him. He'd grown so much taller, his features more defined, but still retained that fragile, porcelain-doll quality that had always made Kazuki want to protect him. Beautiful. Incredibly, breathtakingly beautiful.

He couldn't move. Couldn't speak. The ice cream cone dripped sticky sweetness onto his hand, but he didn't notice. All he could see was him—his childhood friend returned after all these years, now standing in front of him as his new roommate.
