The Alpha's Luna: Burn Her Love to Ashes
Evelyn Severa is a Luna who gave up her dreams to heal Alpha Callum Wolffang after his first love left him broken and crippled. For five years, she dedicated herself to his recovery, becoming his healer, caretaker, and mate under a signed contract. But when Iris Howley, Callum's true love, returns, Evelyn realizes her sacrifices meant nothing. With the contract expiring, she severs their mate bond and disappears without a trace. Callum got exactly what he wanted - so why is he losing his mind searching for the woman he discarded?Chapter 1 Chapter 1
Evelyn Severa's POV: At 6:00 p.m., I laid out six different dinner dishes on the long stone table, each seasoned with Callum Wolffang's favorite hint of vanilla. At 7:00 p.m., I lit a vanilla-scented candle in Callum’s room, letting the calming fragrance seep into the walls, soothing his restless wolf. I checked the bathwater, ensuring it remained at exactly 98.6 degrees Fahrenheit—the perfect temperature for a werewolf to relax. At 8:00 p.m., I placed his favorite boots by the door and hung his outdoor cape beside them, brushing my fingers briefly over the worn fabric. At 9:00 p.m., I changed into the black lace outfit he had picked for me. The doors blew open, carrying with them a rush of icy wind and the sharp, metallic scent of blood. Callum, my Alpha, stepped in. His coat was stained with blood, his entire being humming with violence barely leashed beneath his skin. But the moment his gaze fell on me, something shifted. The fury in his expression eased—replaced by a hunger that made the air between us crackle. I walked to him, taking his heavy cloak from his shoulders and hanging it by the fire without a word. "Shower or dinner?" I asked softly. "Shower," he said, his voice rougher than usual, his eyes not leaving me this time. I sat at the edge of the bathtub, reaching for the cloth to scrub his back. Before I could even touch him, Callum turned, catching my wrist firmly yet gently, pulling me closer until I was standing between his knees. His hands found my waist, sliding under the lace with possessive slowness. He pressed his forehead against my stomach for a brief, startling moment—something so raw it made my throat tighten. Then, without a word, he lifted me onto his lap, letting the bathwater soak my thighs. His mouth traced a searing line along the skin just above the lace. "You have no idea how good you feel against me," Callum murmured, his voice low and hoarse. "You make everything better, Evelyn." The way he said my name made my heart stutter. His wolf rumbled beneath his skin, desperate for me—for us. And for once, I didn't feel like a contract. I felt like a need. A craving. He slid my ruined lace aside with deliberate care, not tearing it in a rage but peeling it away like a man unwrapping something precious. When he finally claimed me against the cold tile wall, it was rough, yes—but not cruel. It was as if he needed to bury himself so deep within me that he could forget everything else. Afterward, Callum wrapped a towel around his waist and ruffled his damp hair, his gaze catching mine and lingering a second too long—something unreadable flickering in his golden eyes. I handed him his pajamas. He didn't take them immediately, only brushed his fingers lightly against mine before letting them hang forgotten on the chair. After it was over, Callum pulled away without a word, his touch gone cold—as if nothing had ever happened. Then he sat down at the table, the scent of venison filling the room. Callum Wolffang was my Alpha, my so-called "mate." However, our marriage was nothing more than just a signed contract. I gave him everything: my time, my dreams, my heart. He accepted it all without hesitation. For a long time, I let myself believe that meant we loved each other. Callum ate distractedly as he stared at his phone screen. I could see a hint of joy in his eyes as a light smile gradually appeared on his lips—something I'd never seen before. I walked past him and unexpectedly caught sight of the name on his phone screen—Iris Howley. I was stunned. However, I simply calmly averted my gaze and went into the kitchen. Suddenly, my phone began to ring. I fished it out from my pocket and saw that it was Callum's mother, Kiera Beowulf. As soon as I answered the call, I could hear Kiera's voice on the other end of the line. She asked, "Evelyn, are you truly going to sever the mate bond with Callum?" I fixed my gaze on the window before me, where the moonflowers were blooming. Then, I answered in an unusually calm voice, "Mrs. Wolffang, you know very well that I'm only with him because of that contract. "The contract terms are ending soon, and his first love, Iris, has also renounced her mate. She's coming back to our territory soon, and Callum's beyond excited. He doesn't need me anymore." Kiera heaved a long sigh. She sounded regretful as she said, "It must have been hard on you for the past few years, since you had to stabilize that despotic wolf of his. I know he must have done some terrible things to you. "I thought that he would start loving you after realizing all the things you did for him... Ah, well, whatever. Iris is coming back anyway, so I'm not worried anymore. You gave up on your dreams to be a wolf doctor five years ago. Let me know if there's anything I can do to help." I stared at the brightly blooming moonflower and spaced out for a brief moment. Five years ago, I gave up a massive scholarship offer. I also gave up my hobbies as I kept trying to please him any way I could, like a little lapdog. It was time for me to move on. I didn't hesitate when Kiera offered her help. "Thank you very much. In that case, please arrange for me to leave as soon as possible." The phone call ended. The moonflower I'd been looking at suddenly fell off and floated to the ground lifelessly. It felt like breaking free from a five-year prison sentence bound by my mate bond with Callum.
Chapter 2 Chapter 2
Evelyn's POV: Five years ago, I was an orphan from a low-ranking clan at the borders and grew up in an orphanage there, called Faelan Orphanage. However, because of my intelligence and hard-working attitude, I had received a considerable amount of monetary support from the Wolffang Trust Fund. I was the only werewoman offered a position to be a wolf doctor at university. Just before enrolment, I decided to visit the Wolffang family to thank them in person. The Wolffang clan owned the most land and were the richest family amongst the other werewolf packs nearby. To help the werewolves living at the borders survive, they built the Wolffang Trust Fund, and I was one of the receivers of their monetary support. I owed them too much. Kiera had looked at me back then. She fell silent for a while before saying, "If you really want to repay us, you can do me a favor instead." The "favor" Kiera meant was to save the only descendant of the Wolffang family, Callum, from a massive heartbreak. Callum and Iris had been friends since they were cubs and meant the world to one another. When Iris told Callum that she wanted to take things slowly, he agreed to wait for her for years. They still never confirmed their relationship even after they turned 18 years old. However, when Callum was 24, Iris suddenly left the pack with another wolf, leaving Callum behind. Callum lost control of himself and chased fervently after her and got himself into a serious car accident. After waking up, he realized that he had been heavily injured, and one of his legs was also crippled. He then began drowning his sorrows in alcohol every day. His strong, muscular body disappeared, and his wolf dwindled in power. It was precisely because of Callum's inability to control his wolf that it kept going berserk and attacked his own family members. What Kiera wanted me to do was to become Callum's mate to save him from himself. She also knew that I was talented in medicine and had a strong, obedient wolf. So, to repay her for her help, I gave up the opportunity to go to university and signed a five-year contract with Kieran to worm my way into Callum's heart. I pushed my wolf to reach out to Callum’s, a feral, uncontrollable thing that thrashed inside him. Day after day, I soothed him, binding his broken pieces back together. At first, it was only to save him. But slowly, as our wolves grew closer, something inside me shifted. I think... I fell in love with Callum too. That year, the pack hosted the Hunting Games. I was injured deep in the woods. I hadn't expected Callum to charge straight into the heart of the wild beasts without hesitation, shielding me from a killing blow. Blood splattered across the ground. He knelt before me, shielding my body with his own, his voice rough and steady in my ear. "Don't be afraid. I'm here." In that moment, I truly fell for him. It didn’t take long for rumors to spread. People said that Callum Wolffang, the cold, untouchable Alpha, now had a woman hopelessly devoted to him. But what they didn’t see was that Callum, who had pushed away countless admirers, never once pushed me away. When he looked at me, there was a flicker of warmth in his otherwise frozen eyes. Sometimes, when I touched him, he no longer flinched. He would simply stay still, letting my fingers trail over his old scars in silence. I foraged the mountains for the rarest herbs, brewed healing potions by hand, and nursed him back from the edge of ruin. Bit by bit, his leg healed. He rose again, stronger and prouder, as if he had never fallen. One night, as we sat before a dying fire, Callum spoke in a low voice. "Why do you keep doing this for me?" I looked at him and smiled softly. "Because when I see you," I whispered, "I see a piece of myself, and the one soul I want to follow for the rest of my life." Callum said nothing. He only pulled me into his arms, holding me tightly as if I was the only thing anchoring him to this world. I truly believed, back then, that we loved each other. In that moment, I truly believed that all my efforts had finally touched him. I believed Callum loved me. One night, at a dinner event, Callum joined in a bet with the rest of the other elites and socialites in the clan. They bet on a piece of prime land in Northville that their female plus ones would jump into the sea to search for the legendary, long-lost emerald-encrusted silver dagger that the king of the werewolves, Lupinus Wolffang, had lost at sea. I immediately jumped into the icy sea without further thought. I knew that Callum had spent countless sleepless nights trying to acquire the rights to that piece of land. So, while the other young women were still contemplating jumping because of the strong winds, massive waves, and the legend that probably wasn't even true, I took the first step and did it anyway. When I got rescued, I was clutching the emerald-encrusted dagger tightly in my hands that I'd searched high and low for on the seabed. That was the first time Callum ever lost his composure in front of everyone because of me. His voice trembled, rough and unsteady, as he held me tightly and blurted out, "I...I want us to be mates. I'll love you the best I can." In that moment, I truly believed that all my efforts had finally touched him. I believed Callum loved me. However, I only learned later that Callum only proposed to me that night because Iris had posted a photo of herself kissing her husband under the moonlit night on her social media account. Callum had only asked me to marry him out of spite and jealousy. Still, in order to fulfill the contract that I'd signed with Kiera and remove Iris from Callum's painful memories, I still did everything in my power to be nice to him. I would hunt the freshest venison for him, satisfy his wolf's needs, and more. When I learned that his birthday wish since he was young was to watch the falling stars, and that he still hadn't seen them before, I purposely spent half a year scouting around for the best mountaintop to watch the stars. I waited for him all night, and Callum never showed up. He had even blocked our mind link. Later, I found out he had gone to see Iris. Iris' marriage was going through some turbulence at that time, and it was also then that Callum started leaving his pack every week, delivering all sorts of gifts and presents right to Iris' door to cheer her up. However, he never let her know that he was the one sending her the gifts. On the day Iris finally returned, Callum had rushed over because he wanted to see her as soon as possible and got himself into another accident. I didn't sleep for three whole nights as I stood vigil by Callum's bedside the whole time he was unconscious at the hospital. Yet, the only name Callum ever kept repeating was Iris. In that moment, I realized I was never meant to be his true mate. Luckily, the contract was coming to an end, and Iris had also returned to the pack in the territory. Callum would be able to be with his first love, which meant it was also time for me to leave. From today onward, Callum and Iris could finally spend the rest of their new life together.
Chapter 3 Chapter 3
Evelyn's POV: "Who were you talking to?" Callum suddenly asked in a deep voice as he approached me from the back, breaking the silence in the kitchen. He was standing at the door, his sharp eyes focused on the phone in my hand. I quickly put my phone away and fibbed, "Nothing, just a routine call from the clan." It was getting dark at night, and Callum lay on his side on his half of the bed. His breathing was calm and steady, as if he was already fast asleep. Meanwhile, I stared up at the ceiling and couldn't sleep a wink all night. I gripped the contract document in my hand. I had been putting up with him and his cold demeanor for five years. It was all finally coming to an end. The next morning, Callum saw the sweets and chicken breast I'd put on the breakfast table. At once, he frowned deeply. "You know that I only like fresh meat. What's the point of making all these?" he asked, sounding extremely dissatisfied. I lowered my head and sliced the chicken breast with my knife, answering lightly, "This was all that was left in the fridge." That was a lie. I was simply preparing for my departure, which included getting myself familiarized with human food. Callum didn't think much about it and just put his phone on the table. However, he kept staring at it until a notification sound popped up along with a text message. He grabbed it at once, his expression softening. I didn't even have to ask to know who he had been waiting for. Iris was going to light up my Alpha's world once more. I watched Callum quietly before taking out a divorce agreement and putting it down quietly on the table. "Callum, let's get a divorce and end our relationship," I said in a calm voice as if just talking about the weather. Callum didn't even raise his head, too engrossed in his conversation with Iris, when he replied distractedly, "Okay." I had expected his reaction. Although I was supposedly his mate, he had never really paid much attention to me, let alone what I was doing or saying to him. I flipped to the last page of the divorce agreement and handed him the pen. "Sign here." Callum's eyes were still on his phone when he grabbed the pen from me and signed his initials on the line I pointed at. I then picked up the document and continued, "Callum, I'll be leaving at the end of the month-long cooling-off period." Callum just hummed in response. Then, he set down his fork and turned to leave. I watched his back and finally couldn't hold back anymore. I called out to him. "Callum, did you even hear what I just said?" Callum stopped in his footsteps and looked at me in confusion. He frowned lightly and said, "You told me something about sending more supplies to the wolf clans at the borders, didn't you? That was what the contract was for. "I remember that you brought it up to me a few days ago. What's the matter with it now?" I had actually given him the other contract to sign last month. As expected, Callum hadn't paid attention to a single word I had said. He never cared about me. However, it wasn't going to matter anymore. I thought, "I hope you'll be happy with Iris after I'm gone." However, I plastered a smile on my face and told him, "It's nothing." … That afternoon, I drove the pickup truck to the packs at the borders to deliver the supplies to them. After I was done, I went to see Vera Knot, the head of Faelan Orphanage, to say goodbye to her. "Ms. Knot, I'm leaving the pack to study medicine abroad." Vera was happy for me when she heard that. Since I was young, my dream had been to be a successful wolf doctor. Vera had felt like it was a waste when I gave up the opportunity to further my studies for Callum. "That's just good news!" Vera said, grabbing my hands in delight. However, her face suddenly dropped. "If you're studying medicine overseas, that means you're going to be separated from Callum. You'll both be in a long-distance relationship, and that's not very healthy for your emotions. "Moreover, the countries abroad aren't as friendly and welcoming to us werewolves. Are you sure that you've thought everything through?" I looked at a few kids chasing each other around at the playground and slowly shook my head. "I won't be in a long-distance relationship with him. We're already divorced." Vera was stunned for a moment. Then, she let out a long sigh. After the sigh, she grabbed my hand and said, "Your relationship has always seemed one-sided to me. You were the one always keeping it afloat… Callum had never cherished you, not even once. It's good that you're both divorced now." I smiled lightly and shook my head again. "It's okay. I'm finally free now."
Chapter 4 Chapter 4
Evelyn's POV: After leaving the orphanage, I went home and headed straight upstairs. I pushed open the wooden door next to the bathroom and walked into my personal storeroom. I went to the side, brought out an old wooden box, and started tidying up the things in it. There were only a few pieces of clothing and jewelry in it. They had been courtesy gifts from Kiera five years ago. Meanwhile, during the five years I'd been with Callum, he had only ever bought me racy lingerie and sex costumes meant to please his wolf. After tidying up my clothes, I turned around to look at the other items I'd put in the corner. These items were all gifts I thoughtfully bought for Callum every year using the money I managed to save from my daily expenses. However, I could see that there was already a thin layer of dust on them. I put the items all into the wooden box, called up the recycling services, and sold everything off for a handful of cash. Just as I was about to turn and go back into the house, a black car screeched to a halt mere inches away from me after zooming out from the woods, nearly knocking me over. The door opened, and Callum's younger sister, Lily Wolffang, stepped out of the car in her luxurious leather coat and with a face full of makeup. Lily saw the recycling truck in the yonder out of the corner of her eye and scoffed coldly. She then looked at me and said, "I guess that's expected from a poor little thing coming from nowhere, peddling off your stuff for pennies. I bet you stole a bunch of stuff from our family for years!" I looked at Lily calmly before turning to leave. Lily's smile immediately dropped. She ran up to me and grabbed me. "Stand there!" I shook her hand off and ignored her. Ever since marrying into the Wolffang clan, I had been bending over backward to serve each of them and make them happy. So, this was the first time I had ever shown Lily my cold attitude. Lily was furious when she saw how I was treating her. "Are you deaf? I'm talking to you! Can't you hear me?" Lily had never liked me from the start. She thought that someone from my background was too lowly to be her sister-in-law. So, throughout the five years, she had been secretly sabotaging me—either by locking me up in the bathroom or breaking all my hunting tools. Now that I was finally going to be free, I didn't have to bother about trying to please her any longer. Suddenly, Lily laughed and told me, "You know that Cal's first love is back, right? I bet you've heard of her. Iris Howley. She's the only one who deserves to be with my brother. As for you…" She gave me a once-over with disdain in her eyes. "You're just a maggot from a lowly clan in the borders. We can finally get rid of you!" After Lily spoke, another person stepped out of the black car. This was the first time I had ever seen Iris in person. This was the woman whom Callum couldn't and wouldn't stop thinking of. Iris had a lovely head of long, golden locks. Her skin was as smooth and flawless as ivory, and she was dressed in a beautiful white dress. Her eyes were deep and mesmerizing, and she gave off an air of elegance. Iris walked toward me slowly and said in a soft voice, "Lily, you shouldn't speak like this to Ms. Severa. After all, she's Callum's mate.""Mate?" Lily laughed scornfully. "Haven't I been telling you in the car, Iris, that you're the only one Cal wants? He was the one who gave you all those gifts and presents in the past five years whenever he left the pack. Can't you see how much you mean to him?" After Lily was done talking to Iris, she then turned to me and barked out her orders. "What are you still standing there for? Hurry up and bring Iris' suitcases into the house. Cal agreed to let her stay here." I simply glanced at the suitcases, ignored them, and walked away. Lily was so mad that she stomped her feet on the ground. In the end, it was the driver who had to help them bring the suitcases in. Lily rushed in first to give me an earful, but that was when Callum suddenly walked into the living room. He hurried toward Iris and gave her a quick once-over. After making sure that she was alright, he then turned to me and said, "Iris' home is still under renovation, so she will be temporarily staying with us." I looked at Callum silently without saying anything. Iris, on the other hand, lowered her head and bit her lips. She said in a soft, weak voice, "I don't think that's a good idea, Callum. After all, this is still a den that you share with your mate. If I stay here, Ms. Severa will undoubtedly get upset with me…""Don't bother about it," Callum said, interrupting her. "Evelyn has always been an understanding person. She'd never kick up a fuss over such a small thing." I nearly burst out laughing when I heard what he said. I didn't show my emotions on my face, however. I just told her in a calm voice, "Of course, I wouldn't. Ms. Howley, you're more than welcome to stay." It just made sense. This home was going to belong to her eventually, anyway.
Chapter 5 Chapter 5
Evelyn's POV: Callum was worried that Iris still wanted to leave, so he quickly got the maids to bring Iris' suitcases into the largest bedroom in the house, which was the bedroom I shared with him. "It's already late. What are you still doing, standing here like a dummy? Go and make dinner now! If you keep being a lazy bum then you won't even get to sleep in the maids' quarters!" Lily exclaimed haughtily as she pointed at me. "Also, Iris likes venison, so you'd better choose the right amount of lean meat for her. Get it?" In the clan, it was always the job of lowly maids to clean and prepare hunted prey for food. Yet, ever since marrying Callum, I had done everything by myself. Callum was a very picky eater who would only eat my cooking. Even if he was a very hard customer to please, I still did everything to satisfy him even if I was dead tired. However, this time, I just looked up at them faintly and said, "I can't." They were understandably shocked, since this was the first time I had said no. Callum frowned hard and looked at me, displeased. I could tell that he was getting angry at me. I was just about to explain myself when Iris suddenly turned red in the eyes and bit her lower lip. "It's all my fault. I shouldn't even be here. I'm just causing trouble in the pack as soon as I get back. I shouldn't have asked Ms. Severa to make dinner for me. I should just leave…" Then, she turned as if she wanted to go upstairs to retrieve her suitcases and leave, but Callum stopped her. "Don't leave. This has nothing to do with you." Callum then turned toward me and said in a low, seething voice, "Didn't you just say that you were fine with her staying? What kind of attitude is this now?" I lifted my bandaged arm and showed it to him. I still answered him calmly, "I hurt myself the last time I went hunting for you. I can't move my fingers at all." Actually, I wasn't hurt. It was just that both I and my wolf were not in the best mood now, and we didn't want to make dinner for anyone. Also, my contract with Callum was already up, so I didn't have to waste any more of my time and energy on him. That was why I decided to bandage my arm up and use it as an excuse to get myself out of cooking for them. At once, the tension in the air rose. I had always been the one in charge of all the cooking and cleaning at home. So, the maids would all leave the house on the dot when they were done for the day. As of now, I was the only one who knew how to cook. None of them knew how, and we were also out of fresh ingredients anyway. Even if we were to get the maids to come back, it would be too late by the time they prepared dinner for us. Lily frowned unhappily and said, "Why didn't you tell us earlier that you were hurt? You were trying to starve us on purpose, weren't you?" Lily wanted to continue, but Iris pulled her back. "Lily, don't make things difficult for Ms. Severa," she said in an understanding voice. Then, Iris turned to Callum and said, "I'm not very hungry yet. Why don't we go out hunting together? Didn't you like bringing us out to hunt for prey when we were little?" Iris' suggestion managed to ease the frown on Callum's face. He nodded before turning to me. Then, he spoke in a demanding voice, "If that's the case, you will come along with us. You know which kind of deer would be the tastiest." I scoffed inwardly. Callum was such a cold-hearted creature that he didn't even care that I had supposedly hurt myself. We clambered into the car and set off together. On the way, Callum held Iris by her waist and stayed close to her as they chatted about their memories of hunting together when they were young. Lily would chime in their conversation every now and then. The three of them continued to chat excitedly among themselves, completely forgetting that I was also there with them. Just as they were laughing about something, Iris suddenly looked back at me and said with a smile, "Sorry about that, Ms. Severa. It's not that we're ignoring you on purpose. It's just that you don't exist in our memories." It wasn't just their memories that I didn't exist in. Soon, I wasn't going to exist in their future either. I just hummed softly and closed my eyes. We soon reached the wood, and Callum gave out directions for us to hunt. I was told to go down a dark and narrow path on my own while the other three went together. While passing by a brook, I looked at myself in the reflection of the water. My long hair was unruly and splayed all over my back. My face also looked tired and weary. Iris had also been in another marriage for five years, but she still looked as fresh and lively as ever, while I only looked exhausted and done with life. I just had to hold on a little more before I was finally free. "Evelyn, this way! Now!" Callum's low voice suddenly rang out in the dark of the night as he barked out an order at me. They had managed to catch a deer and were summoning me over to cut it up for them. After all, this was a very bloody, messy, and tiring job, and none of them had ever done it before. "Use that good arm of yours to cut up the meat for us. It's only lowly werewolves like you who know how to do it anyway," Lily added haughtily. I thought that since I was going to leave anyway, I didn't want to get into an argument with them if I could help it. So, I bent down, getting ready to serve Callum his last meal before I left. Suddenly, Iris seemingly stepped into a trap that the hunters set up to kill werewolves like us. With a wish, countless silver arrows suddenly shot toward us. "Callum, watch out!" I cried. In the split second that I called out to him, Callum had already shot toward Iris like a dark shadow and pulled her into his arms, hugging her securely in his embrace. The silver arrow whizzed right past the both of them. However, that left me right in the center of the arrow's trajectory. Before I could even react, the first silver arrow pierced deeply into my shoulder. "Ahh!" The inexplicable pain began to spread.
Chapter 6 Chapter 6
Evelyn's POV: "Damn, that hurts so much!" Even more silver arrows were flying toward me. I quickly moved out of the way, but I still got struck by a few more arrows. My wounds were burning, and the pain was indescribable. My wolf howled loudly in pain and agony. The pure silver tips of the arrows were eating into my flesh, making it feel as though I was burning all over. I couldn't even get back on my feet anymore. "Evelyn!" After the ambush was over, Callum finally released Iris and walked toward me. There was a slight panic in his eyes. "Does it hurt? I'll bring you to the wolf doctor at once!" I looked up at him. I was in so much pain that I couldn't even get a word out. "Oh my god, Iris! You're terribly hurt!" Lily suddenly screamed. As soon as Callum heard that, his attention was immediately drawn to Iris. He then rushed back toward her and saw that she had a few faint scratches on her arm. It sure seemed like she was "terribly" hurt. Iris pulled her arm away from Callum and shook her head, her eyes turning red. "I'm fine. Ms. Severa's wounds look more serious than mine. Get her to the wolf doctor first." As soon as Lily heard that, she immediately stood up for Iris. "Cal, why are you still hesitating? Iris got hurt by the silver arrows! Don't you know how dangerous it is? What if she gets a terrible infection?" Callum frowned. Finally, he looked back at me with a briefly conflicted look. "Iris has a weakened immune system, so I can't let anything happen to her." Callum spoke lightly, but I heard every single word he said. The next moment, Callum picked Iris up and spoke to me without even looking back. "Tend to your injuries by yourself. I'll tell the medics to pick you up in a bit." I watched as the three of them disappeared into the night, feeling a blunt yet pounding pain in my chest. My body still felt as though it was being consumed by fire as the pain intensified. Still, I gritted my teeth and stubbornly refused to let myself shed any tears. A while later, the wolf medic finally arrived. He looked at me pitifully as I was close to death. After wrapping my injuries up in some simple gauze, he then brought me to the wolf hospital for emergency treatment. Wounds caused by silver-tipped weapons didn't heal easily. The doctor was stern as he attended to my cuts and wounds, saying, "These are considered very serious silver wounds. Luckily you managed to wrap them up with gauze in time. "It's also sheer luck that you don't seem to be having an infection anywhere, even internally. However, you'll need to constantly take medications so that your wounds don't scar permanently." "Such a poor thing! I heard that Mr. Wolffang rushed Ms. Howley into the hospital and booked out the most expensive ward for her." Two nurses passed by, and I heard them whispering among themselves. "She just got a tiny scratch or two, but yet, he still insisted on getting the best wolf doctor in the hospital to treat her." "Isn't that right? I heard that he stayed with her the whole time and even postponed his meeting with the heads of the other clans." "If only I had a boyfriend who liked me as much as he likes her!" "Haha! Keep dreaming, silly. A man like him would only appear once every million years or so!" … Once every million years or so? I chuckled to myself. A man who abandoned his heavily wounded wife to attend to his first love with barely a scrape on her skin? Sure, a man like him would only appear once every million years indeed. After the wolf doctor was done bandaging me up, I thanked him and walked out of the hospital alone. At that moment, I received an email notification on my phone. I opened it up and saw that it was a message from the university I was going to attend, informing me that I had been accepted into their program. The email reminded me that I should have all of my forms and identification documents with me during enrolment. After so many years, I was finally taking the first step to leave the Wolffang clan and their territory behind. I was doing this for the sake of my freedom. As soon as I got home, I headed straight for my treehouse which was just a while away. This was my private, personal hiding place that nobody else knew of. The moon shone brightly through the windows of my treehouse. It was very beautiful and ethereal. I sat down, grabbed a pen, and put up with the pain as I started filling up my forms for my intake. This was the very first time I was communicating with the world using my own identity instead of as Callum's wife. With every blank space I filled in, I knew that I was going to be facing even more hardships and challenges on the way. However, I had to do this to escape this suffocating marriage and no longer rely on Callum's protection anymore. For three whole days, I never left the attic in my treehouse. I used all the time to fill out every form needed for my enrolment into university. When I finally turned my phone back on again, I instantly received countless missed calls and text message notifications. Each call and text were from the same person—Callum. I was puzzled. Why would Callum be trying to find me like a maniac? Just then, Lily happened to call me. "You fucking bitch! Where the hell are you? Cal's going crazy because of you!" Lily screamed. She sounded like she was making fun of me as she continued, "You're hella delusional if you think that doing this will make Cal care more about you. In your damn dreams, bitch! He belongs with Iris!" She hung up before I could even get a word in. I was long used to Lily's barrage of scathing and humiliating words. However, I just didn't know why Callum would be looking for me so frantically. Was it to determine if I was dead or alive after that ambush of arrows? Or, was it to officially tell me that he was kicking me out of his house? I even had a thought that I must be mistaken, because Callum would never spend any of his time looking for me. However, the 108 missed calls on my call log proved otherwise. It seemed as though Callum was really desperate to find me.
Chapter 7 Chapter 7
Evelyn's POV: I finally went home with a stack of enrolment documents in my arms, feeling as conflicted as ever. As soon as I stepped foot into the house, the maids crowded around me at once. They looked shocked and very pleasantly surprised that I was back. Some of them even nearly cried. "Mrs. Wolffang, you're finally back! The house has been a mess ever since you left. Mr. Wolffang has been in a terrible temper and felt dissatisfied with everything we did. He's already shouted at us many times since…" I cocked my eyebrow as I listened to the maids' grievances. So, the house had been in a mess since I left? "He should get used to it," I said in a low, nonchalant voice. "Soon, he's going to have to get used to me not being in his life anymore." I comforted the maids for a while before walking in. It was dark in the house, as none of the lights were turned on. The only source of light was the moonlight faintly shining through the windows onto the ground. Callum was seated on the couch, alone, the glow from the moonlight illuminating his prominent facial features. His eyes were cold and sharp as he looked at me piercingly. "Where have you been these days?" he asked in a low, displeased voice. I didn't answer him right away. I just put my bag on the table while taking my coat off. Then, I said, "I've been reading up on some medical articles." Callum frowned. "Medical articles? Why the sudden interest?" It wasn't a sudden interest. I had been a top-performing student who was slated to attend medical school had I not agreed to do Kiera the favor to repay her generosity. Had it not been for him, I would have already been an accomplished and well-respected wolf doctor by now. However, I chose not to tell Callum about it. I just poured myself a glass of water as I answered nonchalantly, "There's nothing wrong with reading up on medical articles. I could perhaps even save my own life in emergency situations. Don't you agree?" When he heard this, Callum massaged his temples and said, "Evelyn, I didn't abandon you on purpose the last time. It's just that Iris has a weak body and cannot afford to get hurt in the slightest bit. She'd cry her eyes out if she got so much as a scratch on her skin, what more if it was from a silver arrow. "I grew up with her and got used to taking care of her. That's why I brought her to the hospital first." I had been the one who got stabbed by a dozen silver arrows, but yet, he made it sound as if Iris was the one more seriously wounded instead. Seeing that I didn't say anything in return, Callum continued, "You didn't object to it initially, so why did you suddenly run away from home? Iris' house has been fully renovated now, so she's already moved out. Don't kick up a fuss over things like this anymore." Callum's tone toward the end sounded like he was pinning the blame on me. I didn't know if he was blaming me for running away from home or for my "pettiness" that caused his first love to move out. Either way, I didn't care anymore. I just hummed simply and set down my glass before heading upstairs. "Evelyn Severa!" Callum suddenly jumped to his feet and looked at me longingly. "I'm hungry. Make me some food. Your food tastes better than anyone else's." What a sick joke! I raised my left arm, which was still tightly wrapped up in bandages, and replied in a light manner, "You must have forgotten that my hand is still hurt." Callum was stunned. It was as if he'd just remembered that I had been gravely wounded and would still have injuries all over. I turned around coldly and went upstairs, leaving Callum frozen in his spot. The next morning, I opened my room door and saw Callum standing at the door with a set of car keys in his hand. "This is your compensation." Callum spoke calmly as he rubbed his fingers on the key ring. "About last time… I'd been too busy taking care of Iris that I forgot about you. I just bought this car from an auction. I think it's the model you like.' He tilted his chin upward, pointing toward the sports car parked outside the house. I followed his line of sight and saw a very sporty car in a shiny pink chrome color dazzling under the sun, looking like a billion dollars. I stayed rooted in my spot and didn't take the keys from him. I stared at the pink car with a conflicted look in my eyes. It had been five whole years, and this was the first time Callum had ever given me anything as a present. However, it was only because he felt bad about something and wanted to make it up to me. "I remember that you liked this color," he added confidently. A cold smile appeared faintly on my lips. I hated the color pink. It was Iris' favorite color, not mine. "Look, Iris! Look at this! Cal got a surprise for you!" Lily exclaimed, suddenly appearing with Iris next to her. Lily's eyes lit up when she saw the pink sports car outside the house. She yelled excitedly, "Oh my god, Cal! Isn't this the color Iris said she totally loved? Did you purposely have it custom-made for her?" Iris stood by Lily's side, smiling shyly as she lowered her head to hide her excitement. Callum frowned slightly. His gaze flickered between Iris and the car as if wanting to explain something, but he just couldn't. I knew Callum too well. He just couldn't tell her that this car was actually for me. I stepped forward, took the keys from Callum, and handed them to Iris. "Since you like it so much, you should take it.""Evelyn…" Callum called out to me in disbelief. He stared at me, his dark, obsidian eyes swirling with conflict. "I don't need you to make anything up to me, Callum," I said, looking back up at him coldly. Callum was stunned. I had changed. I was no longer the meek, mild-mannered woman he used to know. She wasn't coming back, ever.
Chapter 8 Chapter 8
Evelyn's POV: I had completed all of the documentation needed on hand. Finally, I could leave today. So, I began packing up my things. While in the middle of packing, Callum's guard, Brutus Fay, delivered a custom-made dress and an intricate necklace to me, inviting me to the Moonlight Ball tonight. I found it ironic as I stared at the dress and necklace in Brutus' hands. Callum and I had already broken our mating oath to the Sovereign Moon and ended our relationship, but Callum still had no idea and wanted me to attend the ball as his partner. I wanted to reject the invitation at first. However, it was the Moonlight Festival tonight, a very important observation among the pack. Callum was an Alpha who had to host the ball with his mate. I didn't want him to feel humiliated if I were to be absent. However, this would also mark the final time I would ever appear in public under this identity. I stood before the mirror, touching the necklace Callum sent. The necklace was made up of many tiny diamonds in clusters and looked stunning on me. I quickly went to put on some makeup before the ball. The venue was abuzz with werewolves. Bright, dazzling lights shone in every corner, casting a brilliant glow over everyone in the hall. Glasses clinked as pleasantries were exchanged, the smell of champagne and wine hanging in the air. Right in the center of the crown stood Iris and a group of other elites. The bright emerald green necklace shining brilliantly on her neck was very noticeable and attracted attention wherever it went. "Iris, Callum is treating you so well. The necklace is so beautiful!""That's right! I heard that this is the only necklace of its kind in the world. I saw on the news that some mysterious billionaire had won it at an auction. I never thought that it was Callum!""It's been so many years, and yet, Callum still hasn't forgotten you. I remember that he used to always hunt and cook for you. Once, when you both quarreled and you gave him the cold shoulder for days, he got so antsy that he came around to us begging for ways to win you back. "He even came looking for me once! Ah, you should have seen him back then, his eyes all red and desperate. You just ignored him for a few days, and it nearly took his life away!" "Iris, I think no one else will ever love you as much as Callum ever will. When he learned that you mated with someone else, he almost gave up on living! But now that you're divorced, I'm sure that he won't want that lowly wife of his by his side anymore. You should both just get together now." "Exactly! You should get together. You belong together!" … I stood in the corner as I listened to the group reminiscing about how good my mate was to another werewolf. "Evelyn." It was Kiera. She called out to me with a smile as she came up to me. Honestly speaking, the only person I would ever miss in this pack was her, and that was it. "Evelyn, I've already made all the necessary arrangements for you once you've left to go abroad. Your enrollment is a little early, so I've also bought you the flight ticket there. The plane leaves in about three hours. Is there anything else you need from me?" I looked at the documents in my hand and felt my heart grow heavy. My hands shook as I imagined the freedom in my new life that was waiting for me. Still, I suppressed my emotions and tucked the documents away safely. "Thank you, Mrs. Wolffang, for everything you've done for me. I'm beyond grateful. I just have a small request. If Callum learns about this next time and asks about my whereabouts, please tell him that you don't know." I no longer wanted to see Callum again for the rest of my life. When Kiera heard this, she was quite shocked. "You didn't tell him that you were leaving?" What was I supposed to tell him? That I had purposely gotten close to him, not because I loved him, but because I was taking orders from his mother as a favor to repay her for her kindness to me? That I had done all of this to help him forget Iris and help him get back on his feet again? Or, was I supposed to tell him that I was divorcing him, going abroad, and never coming back? Would Callum even have cared? He hadn't blinked an eye when he signed the divorce agreement I gave him. His first love had come back, and that was all that mattered. He probably wouldn't even notice if I left him. I smiled at Kiera and said, "There's no need for that. I just want to leave as soon as possible. I don't want any other hiccups to happen." "Who's leaving where?" Callum suddenly emerged from behind me. I didn't know if he'd managed to overhear our conversation or not. Luckily, Kiera hurriedly changed the topic and said, "Nothing. What are you doing here?" "It's time to go onstage," Callum said, looking at me coldly. "You are my mate. You have to host the ceremony with me. Have you already forgotten your duties?" Kiera just rubbed her temples and said, "Oh, yes, I forgot about that. Evelyn, hurry up and go onstage with him. Everyone's waiting for you." The rest of the ceremony went on without a glitch. Callum stood onstage as he gave his speech, sounding powerful and authoritative. Meanwhile, Iris stood right next to him, while I was squeezed into a corner. After the ceremony, the whole hall erupted into applause. I had finished my duties on stage, so I turned to leave. "Where are you going? Have you also forgotten that you're supposed to give out the supplies to them with me for the Moonlight Festival? Do you even know your duties as my mate?" Callum roared. I shook my head and lifted my injured arm. "No, thanks. My wounds are still recovering. You can get Iris to help you instead. A hint of suspicion appeared in Callum's eyes. He couldn't seem to fathom what I said. "Why would I want to get her to help me instead?" I suspected that Callum must be having some form of amnesia. Why else would I tell him to find her? Wasn't he the one who always abandoned me for her anyway? He had secretly done so much for Iris in the past five years. Now, I was just giving him the chance to be out in the open with her. Why was he now looking at me in disbelief? I just smiled and said, "Because you're both very close. It's just handing out supplies, anyway. It's nothing much." Callum saw that I was still smiling and didn't look angry, so he didn't say another word as he went over to Iris and whispered something in her ear. Iris blushed and nodded bashfully, holding his arm as she went back onstage with him to give out the supplies. A romantic melody began to play as they ascended the stage. They looked like they were the ones who belonged together as mates, not me. Before I could even leave, I suddenly heard Callum's friends cheer loudly and yell, "Kiss that girl! Kiss that girl! Kiss that girl!" I turned back to look. Callum looked very happy when everyone pushed him toward Iris. They looked like they were about to kiss. My wolf let out a loud, angry howl, wanting to tear out and claw Iris' face into shreds.
Chapter 9 Chapter 9
Evelyn's POV: I did my best to calm my wolf down. Then, I took out my phone and started mentally calculating the seconds until I could finally leave. If the plane was taking off in three hours, that meant I had to grab my things and leave for the airport as soon as possible. Just as I was about to leave, Lily and her gang of "mean girl" friends stood in my way. "Where are you going, Evelyn?" Lily asked, looking at me with mockery in her eyes. "So what if you've been married to Cal for years? You still ended up in the corner all alone watching him get intimate with Iris. "Didn't I tell you earlier that he's always been in love with Iris? He was only with you because of heartbreak. You'd have gone by now if you knew what was best for you. How dare you still hold on to him with your filthy claws, you shameless wolf? It's no wonder you're so lowly and disgusting." I was in a rush to get home and retrieve my suitcases, and I didn't want to give these people any more attention. I turned to leave, but Lily started to get reckless with me. "Haha! I heard that you're an orphan. I bet you've been marked by dozens of other wolves before. I really wonder how blind Cal must have been to marry some disgusting creature like you." Lily's words drew a bout of laughter from her friends. They also started poking fun at me. "I heard that she can't even morph into a wolf. Her wolf is a weakling! No wonder Callum dislikes her more than ever." "Exactly. Iris has the purest werewolf blood in the pack, and everyone knows that. She's the perfect fit for Callum instead." "Get out of his life if you still know what's best for you. Don't continue bringing such shame to the Wolffang clan!" They started pushing me around while jabbing insults at me. "Are you deaf or dumb?" "Hey, dumbass, we're talking to you!" I stayed quiet and didn't say a thing. One of them finally lost her temper and shoved me hard against the wall behind me. Crash! There was a loud crash as I fell heavily against the wall, and the silver daggers mounted on the wall fell around me, their blades slicing into my skin before landing on the ground. At once, my arms began to bleed. Blood seeped out of my body and dripped onto the floor in a frightful scene. The stench of my blood hung in the air. Callum caught sight of what happened. His pupils constricted at once as he let go of Iris' hands and hurried over to me. When he saw that I was lying in a puddle of my own blood, his eyes went ablaze with fury as he kneeled down and gathered me into his arms. While shouting for the doctor and medics, he glared at the others around me and roared, "Who did this?" The crowd went silent with shock. Callum's face was dark and murderous. Just as he was about to shout again, Brutus hurried over all of a sudden. "Alpha, Ms. Howley suddenly said that her stomach hurts. Please come over quickly!" Callum didn't let go of me. Instead, he frowned and asked, "Is it very serious?" Brutus looked anxious. "Ms. Howley is in so much pain that she's crying." Callum then looked at me, still lying in his arms, a hint of hesitation appearing in his eyes. "Evelyn, I…" I knew what he was about to say. So, I struggled to sit up with a calm face. "I know. She has a weak body and cannot be hurt. You're also used to caring for her since you were both cubs." Callum probably never thought that I would say such things. His lips quivered slightly, but he never said a thing. I clambered back onto my feet rather unsteadily and said, "It's okay. Go and be with her. And let the medics and doctor see her first. I can handle my wounds by myself." Callum looked like he still wanted to speak, but he suddenly heard Iris crying out in pain. Finally, he made up his mind. He looked at me in guilt and said, "Evelyn, I'll come and visit you later. I'll make it up to you." Then, without looking back, he left me determinedly and hurried toward Iris. I watched as he ran over to her and picked her up to comfort her. A small smile hung on my lips. I honestly couldn't care less anymore. However, Lily and her friends thought that I was upset after being rejected and abandoned by my Alpha. She scoffed. "I thought Cal would at least feel sorry for you after what happened, but look, he still abandoned you." "Evelyn Severa, I'd remove myself from the Wolffang clan if I were you so I'd stop being such a nuisance." I ignored the group of people and went into the bathroom by myself. After cleaning my injuries and dressing them up in bandages, I changed into some everyday clothes and limped off on my own. I went back to our house and went upstairs to retrieve my suitcases. After getting my suitcases down, I then placed our signed and finalized divorce agreement on the table. I had just opened the door to leave when I suddenly bumped into Lily, who was coming in. Lily tore me a new one as soon as she saw me. "What the hell were you thinking, running away like that? Cal told me to give this ointment to you. I really don't know what's going on in his head anymore. "I can't believe he wouldn't stay by Iris' side just because he got all worried about you and insisted that I come after you. You just wasted a good chunk of my time looking for you!""I don't need it. Give it to Iris instead," I replied calmly. Then, I pushed Lily aside so I could leave. It was also then that she realized I was bringing my suitcases with me. Her face dropped as she grabbed my wrist. "What are you doing?""What do you think I'm doing with my suitcases? Isn't it obvious? I'm leaving. Your brother likes Iris, and you've been wanting Iris to be your sister-in-law for ages. I'm just removing myself from the picture now by divorcing him and making space for her." Lily widened her eyes when she heard me. She looked completely dumbfounded and couldn't seem to believe what I was saying. After all, she probably thought that I would continue bugging Callum for the rest of my life, like a piece of bubble gum caught in fur. She didn't think that I would actually leave, even if I said so. She suddenly seemed to have come to a conclusion on her own. Her voice trembled as she said, "Evelyn, stop acting. You love Cal too much to leave. You used all sorts of dirty tricks to get close to him in the past. You'd never agree to a divorce! "I understand now. You're doing this on purpose to get his attention, aren't you? You're just playing hard to get! Let me tell you that this would never work on Cal!" My eyes were calm and emotionless. "The divorce agreement is on the table. It's up to you whether you want to believe me or not. By the way, since you're still holding on to me, could it be that you're the one who doesn't want me to leave after all?" Lily immediately let go of my hand as she yelled, "Impossible! I'm so happy that you're finally leaving, you bitch! I'm going to throw a party to celebrate! And Cal is going to be so over the moon when he learns that you're finally gone from his life!" For some reason, Lily didn't seem confident as she uttered the last sentence. "Well, then, congratulations for finally getting your wish," I said flatly, before turning to leave. "Evelyn! Where are you going? Aren't you going to tell Cal?" I didn't think that Lily would panic because I was leaving. I turned to look at her and the mansion behind her that I'd called home for years. To repay Kiera for her kindness, I had pretended to be in love with Callum for five years, letting the others label me as the crazy bitch who'd resort to lowly methods to get close to Callum because of my infatuation with him. To repay Kiera for her kindness, I had thrown away my dreams, gave up on my future, and abandoned my true self. For the past five years, I did my best to be a good mate and a good partner to Callum. I was his sex doll and his healer for years, but I never gained an ounce of respect or dignity while I was with him. I had given up five years of my life in such a desolate way. Finally, I was done repaying Kiera. Finally, I could welcome freedom into my life. I smiled at Lily and said, "Me? I'm going to live to the fullest as myself, Evelyn Severa." From today onward, nothing that happened here would have anything to do with me anymore. Goodbye, Wolffang. Goodbye, Callum. I waved back and started off, bringing my suitcases with me as I went down the moonlit path, never to return.
Chapter 10 Chapter 10
Callum Wolffang's POV: I stayed at the hospital with Iris for three whole days, and Evelyn never once contacted me. She didn't even reply to my messages telling her to get me a change of clothing at the hospital. This woman was acting more and more out of line! I yelled for her as soon as I got home. "Evelyn! Evelyn Severa!" There was no response. I continued yelling for her, but only a few maids approached me with caution. They were so distant and polite with me that it made me angry. They took my coat and shoes from me without even looking me in the eyes. I frowned and asked in a dangerously low voice, "Where is Evelyn?" After stammering for a long while, they finally replied, "Mrs. Wolffang isn't home, sir…" Not again. The same thing happened the last time when I brought Iris to the hospital after she got hurt by the silver arrows. After coming back home, Evelyn was already gone, and she'd only returned a few days later. She was doing it again this time. And yet, before she left, she'd even told me to go ahead and that she would be fine. The more I thought of it, the more ironic it seemed. She was throwing a tantrum again. I put on my slippers and went into the living room. I was already feeling hot and bothered, and the feeling just continued accumulating in my chest. Gradually, it turned into fiery anger. Evelyn had been like an annoying fly, buzzing by my side for five years. She was nothing but my lapdog. So, how dare she disappear like this without a word? Just as I reached the couch, I was immediately drawn to the documents lying on the table. Usually, I couldn't be bothered about things like these lying around the house. However, for some reason, I picked it up today to have a loser look. The title sprang out at me. The three words—Agreement of Divorce—felt like a lightning bolt strike. I quickly flipped to the last page and looked at the signature lines. Right there, scribbled in bold sight, was my signature and initials. All of a sudden, a surge of anger rushed into my brain. I rubbed my finger against my signature, wanting nothing more than to rip it to shreds. It wasn't a photocopy of my signature, nor a forged one. I had actually signed and initialed it there myself. But I had no recollection of ever signing such a document! Suddenly, I recalled signing a document at breakfast that day. Evelyn had given me a document to sign, and I had been so busy chatting with Iris that I signed it without even looking at it. Come to think of it, that must have been the divorce agreement! That fucking, scheming bitch! I crumpled up the document in rage and tore it into shreds before flinging it onto the floor, letting the pieces of torn paper float to the ground. I glared at them and grinned coldly. A divorce? What a sick, fucking joke! Evelyn was madly in love with me. It had been five years. Her love for me would have been deeply rooted in her by now. She had jumped into the sea because she loved me. She hunted for me every day because she loved me. She wore whatever I bought and did everything I told her to because she loved me! No matter how I ignored her, abandoned her, or sidelined her, she would never leave me for real. She was just jealous because I had been taking care of Iris lately. She would eventually come to her senses and return to me. And then, this tantrum of hers would come to an end. She would be back for sure. After all, nobody else in the world could love me as much as Evelyn did. Also, her wolf enjoyed every moment while we were having sex. Something as biologically raw and honest as that would never lie. Evelyn would come running back to me a few days later. I was sure of it. With that, I stopped asking about Evelyn's whereabouts. For the next few days, the others in the house also seemingly agreed to never bring up her name again, as if she had never existed. Today, I finally brought Iris back from the hospital. The maid served soup for dinner. Lily just took a bite and her face immediately fell as she threw the spoon angrily against the table. "Who made this disgusting thing? Where's Evelyn? Make her redo it!" The maid just stammered quietly, "Ms. Wolffang, Mrs. Wolffang has not returned since a few days ago." Lily was shocked. Her eyes widened in disbelief. "She hasn't been back?" She continued muttering under her breath. However, when she saw me looking coldly at her, she shut up at once. After dinner, the maids brought Iris upstairs to rest. Lily, however, refused to leave. She came up to me, looking as if she wanted to say something. "Spit it out," I said. Lily then looked at me happily and asked, "So, Cal, when are you finally going to marry Iris? I've been wanting her to be my sister-in-law forever!" I stared at her icily, my sharp gaze rendering Lily silent at once. Then, I stood up and said in a low voice, "Evelyn will come back.""But haven't you both already gotten divorced?"
Chapter 11 Chapter 11
Callum's POV: I immediately whipped my head up and glared at Lily. My voice was icy as I growled, "Say that again." Lily shuddered. She had always been wary of me as her older brother. However, she still stood before me stubbornly and repeated herself in a shakier voice. "Evelyn has already divorced you. You don't like her anyway. So, why aren't you getting together with Iris yet?" I frowned harder as my voice dipped even lower. "How did you know that we were divorced?" Lily bit on her lower lip and explained quietly, "Last time, when you made me bring her the ointment… I happened to see her leaving the divorce agreement on the table. But I honestly thought that she was just joking." Just joking? When I heard that, my expression immediately hardened. The air seemed to freeze around me, and Lily subconsciously took a couple of steps back. Evelyn had really been thinking about leaving me from the moment she signed the divorce agreement. It hadn't been a joke or a tantrum. And Lily knew about it earlier, but she still did nothing as Evelyn left! I threw my mug of coffee to the ground in a fit of anger. Divorce? How could Evelyn leave me? I'd been too lenient with her in the past! How dare Evelyn leave me? She should have known that she would be bound to me forever from the moment she became my mate! "Contact Evelyn," I said, taking a huge breath to hold in my anger as I spoke to the maids. "Tell her to stop fucking around and get back here immediately." The maids looked at me in a dilemma. "Alpha, we've tried, many times, but her number doesn't even work anymore." I felt my heart shudder. I then quickly took out my phone and looked through my contacts many times. It was only then that I realized I never saved Evelyn's number in my contacts. The last time I called her, I had gotten my assistant to do it for me. "Give me her number," I said coldly. After placing the call, I immediately heard a robotic voice on the other end of the line. "The number you have dialed is not in service." Evelyn had gotten rid of her number. I gripped my phone tightly in my hand until my knuckles turned white. I could no longer suppress the anger I felt in my chest. I jumped to my feet, threw the chair aside, and rushed out of the door. Did she really think that she could escape me? I turned on the engine of my car and floored the gas pedal. My car zoomed down the wet asphalt road in the dead quiet of the night. I stared straight ahead as I drove, my mind replaying the same question over and over again. Where could she possibly go? Evelyn had no relatives. She had grown up in Faelan Orphanage. So, instinctively, I gripped the steering wheel a little harder as I made my way there in my car. The orphanage gates opened for me after I rang the doorbell a few times. Vera stood at the door, looking at me rather coldly. "Alpha Callum. Is there any way I can help you?""Where is Evelyn?" I said, going straight to the point. My tone was authoritative, giving her no choice but to obey my command. She didn't let me in, however. She just stood there, looking at me calmly. "Alpha Callum, you are her mate. If she's left you, and you don't even know where she is, do you think that I would know where she went?""Ms. Knot, she grew up here. She's practically your cub. You—""She is no longer my cub," Vera said, interrupting me. There was disdain in her eyes as she continued, "She has already paid back everything she owed to the Wolffang clan, which is why she chose to leave now. That is her choice and her right. You should let her go." Then, Vera turned and slammed the door shut in my face, leaving me out alone in the night cold. I went back into my car. The anger in my chest was still there, but I had nowhere to release it. So, I punched my steering wheel heavily instead. We had been married for five years. We had been together for five years. How could she really leave like that? Why did she leave me? I glared straight ahead of me. However, the only images that came to mind were her cautious smiles whenever she looked at me. She made me all sorts of delicious food and treated all of my injuries while making sure to please both me and my wolf. Now that I thought of it, it made me feel even more impatient than ever. It seemed as though I never understood her in the first place. She loved me to death! How could she just leave me like that all of a sudden? Just then, my phone rang. It was Mother. I picked up the phone and heard her weak voice on the other end of the line. "Callum, come back home for a bit. I've got something to tell you."
