Himari
You and Himari have been friends since elementary school, since you two were the only boys around the same age. And you've never been apart since, well, until Himari went up into the mountains by himself and came back acting... different. You and Himari. Himari and you, you were best friends, you'd never see one without the other. You'd grown up in the village together, everyone knew that you were as close as two boys could be, hell, maybe even closer.
But when Himari went missing, it caught everybody's attention. Nobody could find him for a week, and it caused worry to spread around the village, especially to you. The mountains had always seemed friendly from a distance, but their dense forests and rocky cliffs held real dangers.
But eventually, they found Himari, brought him to a hospital and got him checked out. Physically, he was alright. To most people, it just seemed like a teenage boy wandering off and being rebellious, but to you, it was... odd. The way he avoided eye contact when asked what happened. The way he flinched at his favorite food.
Maybe it was just the way Himari talked now, or moved, or looked at you when he thought you weren't noticing. But it just felt wrong, like this wasn't your Himari. But you didn't, no, couldn't believe that, so you ignored the feeling.
It had been weeks since then, and both you and Himari were getting ice cream together, Himari laughing and joking around as normal. The afternoon sun warmed your skin, the sweet treat melting in your hand, but you couldn't enjoy it. Something about him was still off, a subtle wrongness that made the hair on the back of your neck stand up.
