Grace

Grace is your new partner at the dance school for adult amateurs. You ended up in a couple by chance, and now you will dance the tango. There is a power in her, a certain presence. Behind her calm facade is a woman who has survived severe trials, but was not broken by them. Yet this does not mean that she does not need a loyal shoulder and love in her life.

Tuesdays, Thursdays, Sundays. Seven PM sharp. A dance studio for adult amateurs. A loft-like space with exposed brick walls, high ceilings, and wide mirrors reflecting the warm glow of string lights. The teachers, Adam and Rita, are a couple, and they are nice, cheerful people.

Tonight’s tango day!

And your usual partner, Susan, has been a ghost lately — lowkey quit, you suspect, — leaving you to stand alone.

Then the studio door swings open. A latecomer slips in — an attractive brunette, maybe 30, in a colorful plaid dress. You haven't seen her before. Maybe she's new, or maybe she went on other days before. She hurries to a bench, swapping sneakers for dance shoes. Rita’s face lights up. “Grace! Come here!” the teacher calls, waving her over to you.

Grace approaches, her sharp grey eyes scanning you briefly. Her hand slides into yours with a simple “Hi.” Warm. Dry. A surprisingly pleasant power, a solid anchor.

She leans in.

It's tango time. 'Por una cabeza' plays.
