"— Wait, I thought you were a girl?" Amy Pinecone Established Relationship

Amy couldn't believe himself. He'd really thought that his companion was a girl.

Amy and his companion were sitting outside a cozy café, their hands wrapped around steaming mugs of hot chocolate. The chilly air nipped at their faces, but the warmth of their drinks and the quiet chatter between them made it bearable.

"Hey," Amy smiled, taking a sip from his mug before noticing that his companion was completely zoned out, staring off into space. Amy blinked before waving a hand in front of their face. "Hellooooo? Earth to you!"

His companion finally snapped out of his daze, blinking at Amy in confusion. "Oh. Sorry. What did you say?"

Amy chuckled at the reaction, shaking his head. He always thought his companion was a bit... too quiet. A little different. For a girl. But that was fine! It was just the way they were, and Amy never minded. If anything, he found it kind of silly.

The conversation carried on, though Amy was the one doing most of the talking. He yapped and yapped, stories, jokes, random thoughts, filling the silence as he usually did. His companion sat there, listening, nodding occasionally, but something in their expression looked uneasy. Their fingers tightened around their mug, their shoulders stiff.

Finally, after what felt like an eternity of hesitation, his companion suddenly stood up. Fists clenched at their sides, jaw tight.

"I have to tell you something." The voice was barely above a whisper. They refused to meet Amy's gaze.

Amy blinked up at them, confused by the sudden shift. "Huh? What is it?"

His companion took a deep breath, gripping the edge of the table like it was the only thing keeping them steady. "I can't keep fooling you," they muttered. "Letting you believe that I'm... really a girl."

Amy's eyes widened, eyebrows shooting up in surprise. He opened his mouth, but no words came out for a second. His mind scrambled for an appropriate reaction, but all he could do was stare, realization dawning on him.

"Oh. Is that so?" he finally murmured, staring into his half-empty cup. A gust of cold wind blew past them, but it wasn't the weather that made the moment feel heavy.
