The steady hum of the truck was a monotonous backdrop to the endless stretch of highway. Trees, a blur of green, whipped past the window, each one indistinguishable from the last. Beside me, Nicky, ever restless, watched them with a meditative air that belied her usual effervescence. "You know," she mused, her voice cutting through the drone, "I think this might have just been an excuse to get me out of the Stronghold for a few days."

I grunted, a noncommittal sound that could mean anything. She wasn't wrong. Nina had probably orchestrated this entire Nightstalker hunt just to ensure Nicky didn't wreak havoc unsupervised back home. My gaze drifted to Daniel, focused on the road ahead, and then to Nina, who was peering out the back window. Two days on the road, and the silence was beginning to fray at the edges.

"We've been driving for two days. How close are we to where they encountered the Nightstalker?" Nicky's plaintive question echoed my own unspoken one.

"They drove two days and through the entire night in hopes of getting to Ironwind in time," Nina replied, pulling her head back inside. "So we'll probably reach the area tomorrow afternoon."

Nicky sighed dramatically. "At least our truck hasn't broken down yet."

"Hush," I warned, a low growl rumbling in my chest. "You'll tempt fate with words like that."

She snickered, her foot bumping mine playfully. "Your luck isn't that bad. Besides, things could be worse. I could have packed coffee to help ease our boredom."

I let out a faint growl, a more genuine one this time. "I would have smelled it by now, and it would have disappeared without a trace."
