In a world of betrayal, family politics, and hidden identities, can true worth be recognized beneath a humble exterior?Chapter 1 Chapter 1
It was in the early evening, but it seemed later than it should have. The stormy weather gave an eerie vibe that loomed overhead. A lone wanderer is seen quickly walking towards a sizeable two-story estate door as the lightning flashes illuminating the person trying to avoid the rain. Being his last delivery for the day, he’s been ready for his shift to end so he can take a hot shower to take away the weather’s chill. The small awning above the door gave little relief from the drenching rain from the storm. It finally opened from knocking on the door for a minute and sounding the doorbell multiple times. A rather displeased man is standing there and questions him. “This is the Weston estate. State your business.” He bellowed, looking at the gentleman in front of him being rained upon. “I’m here to deliver this envelope. It’s assigned to Mr. George Weston and must be hand-delivered and signed for.” The delivery man said quickly, holding a large brown envelope while getting drenched by the rain. “All deliveries are to be handed to me to be delivered; just hand it over.” He didn’t smile or was courteous in the least and began to grab for the large brown envelope in the delivery guy’s hands. “Sorry, no can do, it has to be delivered by my service, and he has to sign for it.” The young man replied, feeling annoyed. He had just explained that it had to be hand-delivered, and the person in front of him wanted to snatch it from his grasp. “Wait right here as I go inquire with the master.”“Are you kidding me? It’s raining cats and dogs out here, and this thing isn’t giving enough shelter. Could you please let me in before I’m drowned?” asked the delivery man pointing at the small awning and getting even more annoyed at the butler leaving a person in this condition. “Very well, if you must, please come in, stay by the door, and do not wander off.” Replied the butler as he moved aside and allowed him into the two-story foyer while closing the door. “Man, any longer, and I would have drowned. Wow, what a place. It’s grand to see.” The delivery man looked around the foyer as he walked into the home. “Someone who hasn’t seen the world, I gather. Please wait here, and I’ll go inquire with the master.” The butler then turned and started to leave the foyer. “Right here?” asked the delivery guy taking two steps more into the home and then replying, “Or right here?” He then took two more steps into the room. “Humph, there’s always a comedian.” The delivery guy smiled as he waited for his return, shaking the rain off of himself and trying to dry his wet hair with his hands as best as possible. He looked at the foyer more, and he could see the exquisite quality of the room with a rounding staircase leading to the second floor. His eyes went up and locked upon a gorgeous woman coming down from the second floor. She gracefully came down like a goddess. Her golden hair shining with the light, piercing blue eyes and beautiful features couldn’t compare to some glamor models you would see on tv or in magazines. She wore a long red evening gown that came down towards her feet and hugged her every curve. The delivery man was awed as she approached him; he had never seen such a more beautiful woman in his life that made him utterly speechless. “Who are you? What are you doing here? Don’t you know where you are?” she asked continuously as she approached the young man as she was getting off of the stairs. The delivery guy could only look at her beauty as she continued to question him. “What, the cat got your tongue? Can’t you speak?” She was annoyed at the person in front of her for not answering her questions. “Right, sorry, my name is Blake Elon, from Elon Delivery Services. I’m here to deliver this envelope to Mr. George Weston, and I’m waiting for him to receive it.” He finally answered. Blake was of average height with delicate features, giving you the impression of a meek and timid person, black hair, brown eyes that seemed slightly saddened, with a healthy build. Some would say he was pretty handsome but never caught this woman’s eye, and being only a delivery guy in status, he was beneath her. “Grandfather would never come to you. Why are you here dripping all this water onto the floor? Don’t you have any sense of surroundings?” She said with annoyance. Before he could answer her, the butler came back. Seeing the two together, he hurried over. “Little Miss, what are you doing here? They’re all waiting for you in the dining area.”“I saw this person loitering in the foyer. Why else would I be here? Sigh, seeing everyone is waiting, I’ll go first.” She replied as she turned onto her heels and left them, ignoring the young man altogether. Commoners to her were only trash in her eyes and served only one purpose: to serve her and her family. “Wow, what a firecracker.” Said Blake looking at the woman when she left the room. “Sir, please restrain yourself. She’s the lord’s first granddaughter Miss. Claire Dalton. If you would please follow me, I will escort you to the master. You are not to speak until spoken to.” The butler then turned and headed in the direction of the woman. The two walked into a large dining area, overhearing an ongoing conversation. He could tell that a personal conversation was taking place. “Grandfather, Steve Andersons is willing to propose marriage tomorrow, and I want your blessing so I can accept.” Said Claire Dalton, who just criticized Blake in the foyer. Their seating at the table corresponded to their family status. The head of the family is an elderly gentleman in his late sixties sitting at the head of the table. A blond woman is to his right in her thirties, and Claire is next to her and has an empty chair next to Claire, awaiting another person. On his left was a gentleman. Next to him is a woman and a young man sitting next to her were listening with interest. Who hadn’t heard of the prestigious young man Steve Anderson? His family business was the leading real estate company in Swanville. This would bring great rewards if Claire could marry into the Anderson family. “Steve Anderson? He’s the heir to the Anderson family estate. A first-class family, am I not mistaken?” asked the elderly man at the head of the table. He looked like he was in his seventies and had an heir of superiority on him. He was George Weston, the head of the family. “Yes, father. We could also become a prestigious family with his family’s resources.” Replied the blond woman sitting next to Claire. She was her mother, Julie Weston, and she looked like her daughter with a fair complexion, slim body, and a flare of arrogance. “Where is he now?” asked George Weston. “Why isn’t he here to ask me himself?”“Grandfather, he has been detained with work. His father has kept him in the company so he can take it over.” Claire Dalton replied very proudly of her future husband. “Let me think upon this, where is Johnson? Wasn’t there a delivery for me?”“Sir, the young gentleman is here with the delivery.” Said Johnson bowing and offering the still wet young man to him. “Sir, if you would kindly sign for this,” Blake said, handing him the large brown envelope and his tablet. “Right, right, let’s see the contents first.” Said George Weston taking the large envelope. When he opened the envelope and took the contents out, his expression had changed to confusion and concern. Placing the contents back into the envelope and placing it down, he looked closer at the young man beside him. “Son, what’s your name?”“Blake Elon, Sir.”“Are you related to the Elon Family in Capital City?” George asked, squinting his eyes to see through the young man beside him. A few snickers came from the family. Who didn’t know the famous Elon family from the capital? How could a meer delivery guy be from that family? “Sir, I come from a distant side of the main family. I’m originally from the country.” Blake hurriedly lied. ‘What’s up with this old man? Does he know that I’m a direct descendant from the family?’ Thought Blake to himself as he eyed the older man in front of him. “You look quite healthy and with a steady job, I see.” George Weston continued. “Yes, sir, it’s not bad, the pay is a little low, but it’s all I need for right now,” Blake explained while holding onto his signature pad. ‘It is all I need right now, staying low-key. I don’t know who put my information on the dark web, but I’ve returned from the military with many enemies.’ Thought Blake, still standing beside George Weston. “Sir, if you don’t mind, I still have other business. If you could please sign here, our transaction will be complete.” Said Blake handing him the signature pad. “Julie, when is Mr. Anderson supposed to propose to my dear Claire?” George asked, ignoring Blake. The woman next to Claire and him who spoke earlier said, “Father, he’s scheduled to come over tomorrow evening to confess to my dear daughter.”“I will deny this transaction. Claire, you are not to pursue this engagement.” George declared, looking at the mother-daughter duo.
Chapter 2 Chapter 2
To everyone at the table, this came as a complete surprise. Everyone knew that with the help of the Andersons, the family would soar to the top known families in Swanville, California. Steve was the young master of the Anderson family; he was to be the next CEO of their real estate company and heir to Anderson’s fortune. Who wouldn’t want him to be their grandson-in-law? Everyone was whispering to one another, unable to believe what the head of the family had said. “Grandfather, why? He’s competent; he can bring many benefits to the family if this union can be….” Said Claire, almost in tears. She worked hard to pursue this family union, bringing her more benefits into the family’s good graces and using this opportunity to get ahead in the company. A young man sitting opposite Claire smiled. He was jealous of Claire’s influence on the family; she and her sister were always his grandfather’s favorite. He was Henry Weston, Claire’s first cousin, and she and he were always rivals. “Silence! I have made my decision. You are not to see that man again; do I make myself clear?”“This can’t be, husband. Talk to your father. This has to be a misunderstanding.” The woman next to the gentleman next to George whispered in surprise. She is Terrie Weston, and she always valued status over anything. “Father, is there a misunderstanding? I’m sure if we discussed this union with the Andersons.” Replied the gentleman next to George. He is Quinton, the first son of George. “Yes, father, I’m sure there is a misunderstanding, as Quinton just stated. There has to be a marriage for Claire; she’s not getting any younger. How could you be so defiant against this union? Think of the family and its future.” Said Julie Weston, almost in tears, the second child of George. “Enough. If there has to be a marriage, I’ll provide a suitable and more capable person for her.” George then looked Blake up and down and then smiled. ‘What is this, the old Middle Ages? They let the grandfather choose who and who not to get married to? It’s a good thing I left my family; it would have been the same for me. To get ahead in the family, I probably would have had to marry into one of the larger families as prestigious as ours, never considering my feelings or the woman’s.’ Thought Blake to himself, not paying attention to the rest of the conversation until he finally took interest when he was mentioned. “Someone more capable? Grandfather, I don’t know who could be more capable than Steve Anderson. Who could you be more interested in, this delivery guy? Please.” Said Claire rolling her eyes with a half-joking tone. “That’s an excellent idea. Son, what do you think?” Asked George Weston, who was looking at him with interest. “What, what do you mean? Look, all I want to do is finish our transaction so I can return home.” Blake looked at George and the rest of the family, who looked at him, astonished. “Have you married already?” Asked George, looking at him more curiously. “Married? No. There’s no time for dating, much less marriage, and no one wants to date a delivery guy who only amounts to a thousand a week in payment.”“Okay, then it’s settled. You will marry my granddaughter tomorrow.”“What? Grandfather, no, I refuse!” shouted Claire looking like she would cry. “I also refuse!” Yelled Julie Weston slamming her hand onto the table and rising from her chair. “If you refuse, you and your daughters will be disowned and no more funding for the three of you. I hear Tabitha is doing well in college; how will you pay for her tuition and your expensive lifestyle? I’ll kick you three to the curb tonight!” George yelled back, not letting mother or daughter dispute any longer. ‘This old man, how could he do such a thing? My daughter can bring wealth and power to the family, and he wants to throw it away to this bumkin? No, I can’t allow it.’ Thought Julie Weston as she sat back down. “Father, be reasonable. Claire has a good relationship with….” Started Julie in a smoother, softer tone, thinking she could get onto her father’s good side, pretending to be girly like she used to do to get her way. “Another word from you, and your daughters will be thrown out into the streets this instant!” George would not have it; Julie could always sway her father, but he was adamant about his decision this time. Julie had no choice in the matter but to shut her mouth at that time. Claire was crying next to her with her hands on her face to cover the shame. “Mom, don’t let this happen. I worked so hard to get Steve even to acknowledge me.” Cried Claire turning into her mother’s bosom. “I know, but what are we supposed to do? If we upset him, we will be paupers on the street begging, worse off than that delivery man.” Replied Julie, all the while trying to comfort her daughter by putting Claire’s head deeper onto her chest like she used to do when she was little. “Look, that man still hasn’t said anything; maybe he will refuse, and we will survive this night.” ‘What the hell, this old man wants to give his granddaughter to me? Although she’s a beauty, she’s a bit of a snob. No, I have to refuse; this will only bring others into the enemies’ hands. There is no way that I can burden anyone with my problems.’ Thought Blake to himself, astonished over the turn of events. “Sir, with all due respect, I don’t want to marry your granddaughter. I don’t even know her; I just met her in the foyer tonight.” Said Blake protesting. How could he just up and get married to a woman he hardly even knows? Hearing this, Claire looked up with tears streaming down her cheeks to the man that was her only hope. “What do you mean you don’t want to marry my granddaughter? She is a gorgeous woman; what is there to not want? She is talented, has money, and comes from a prestigious family. What is there that any man would want?”“Love. What of her having the right to choose the man she wants to love?”“Rubbish, when I married my wife, God rest her soul, it was an arranged marriage. We lived together and had three boys and one girl. What did love have to do with it? I’m telling you now, you will be marrying my granddaughter tomorrow morning, or I will make your life a living hell. No one will hire you after I’m finished with you. You will live out the remainder of your life on the streets begging, no matter where you run to.” Said George Weston looking at Blake with stern eyes. Shocked at what he had just heard, Blake had to think of a way out of this but couldn’t. He could return to his family, but his enemies are great; maybe he would bring disaster back to his family, but he couldn’t do that. “Sir, these conditions are a bit harsh. I’m being forced into a marriage I don’t want and forcing your granddaughter to do the same; there is no room for compromise?” Pleaded Blake one more time. “I’ll tell you what, agree to marry her, and I’ll write out a marriage contract. If you two don’t fall in love within three years, the marriage will be annulled, and you will be free of all obligations. If you fall in love with each other, you will make this grandfather very happy. What do you say the both of you?”“After three years of marriage, it will all be annulled? Like it never happened?” asked Claire wiping her tears. “I guess it can be arranged, but with what conditions? I want the final say.”“Yes, yes, what say you, Blake? Do you still protest this arrangement?” Asked George. ‘I would be a live-in Son-in-law, living off of my wife and her family. At least she’s a beautiful woman, and she needs to be knocked down a few notches with her arrogance and snobby ways.’ Thought Blake to himself. ‘This could be a blessing in disguise, I can continue being low profile, and no one would be the wiser, and after three years are up, I just up and leave.’ “What benefits do I receive if the marriage fails after the allotted time?” Asked Blake raising his head, being he’s going to be the one to live with this snobbish woman, there has to be something for him.
Chapter 3 Chapter 3
“You still want benefits?” Asked George Weston, getting aggravated over the whole ordeal; what was the matter with today’s youth? I would have jumped at the chance to marry into a wealthy family. “I’m selling my freedom of three years in an arranged marriage that we both don’t want; of course, there has to be an incentive.”“How about this, If you two don’t continue the marriage after the allotted time, you can walk away with a million dollars.” Said George Weston. “A million is too low, three million, and it’s a done deal.” Blake is reputed, and how could there be such a low number for the time he had to stay with this woman? “Agreed. What do you say on your end, my dear?” Asked George Weston, looking upon Claire with hope. “Okay, but during this time, he cannot touch me. I will continue to be pure for my future husband. If he defiles me, this contract will be breached, and he will have to pay me fifteen million dollars back as compensation.” Replied Claire looking at Blake with a bit of a smirk. “Fifteen million. Where could I get that amount of money?” Asked Blake back to her. It wouldn’t have been a problem if he had been back in his family, but he was only a delivery man. “Not my problem, but that is my condition for this marriage. What do you say?” Asked Claire, still looking at Blake. “Fine, I see no way out of this, so let’s do this.” Said Blake looking beaten. “Good, Johnson, have the lawyers arrange the contract for these two and have the marriage licenses ready by tomorrow morning.” Said George Weston. “Sir, then if you, please sign for your delivery, I will be on my way.” Said Blake handing his pad back to George. “Hu, what? Oh yes, the delivery, okay, here you go.” Said George Weston as he finally signed the pad. “If there is nothing else, I’ll be taking my leave.” Said Blake giving a slight bow. “No need. You will be joining us for dinner tonight and will be given the guest room,” George replied, looking back at Blake. “Sir, I…” Started Blake but was interrupted by George. “Grandfather.” Replied George. “What, oh, grandfather, I need to take care of some business, maybe at a later time.” Said Blake looking at George with a desperate look. “It’s good to be busy, okay I will not delay you anymore, but be back tomorrow by seven to sign the contract and marriage license and grandson-in-law if you decide to escape, remember I can find you no matter where you run.”“Si... grandfather, I’m a man of my word. I shall return tomorrow morning as planned.” Blake, slightly bowing and heading towards the door to leave the dining room. George looked at the back of his new grandson-in-law and smiled. No one knew that he had met with this young man earlier in his life and recalled that he was a direct descendant of the Elon family. Then George looked at his granddaughter and daughter and frowned, both in an upset mood. “You two, are you still not satisfied?” asked George. “It’s outrageous that you would put a chastity clause and a penalty for him; how am I to get a great-grandson?”“Father, how else are we to preserve her for her future husband, and what difference does it make? If they fall in love, the clause will be nulled, and they will live with each other giving you great-grandchildren after three years.” Replied Julie Weston. “Claire, you will have to find Steve tonight and have sex with him and try to conceive a child for him. Only that way can we not lose face, and you will be his wife before this all starts.” Whispered Julie to her daughter. “Yes, mom. After diner, I will contact him, let him know what has taken place, and let him take responsibility for me.” Claire whispered back. Sensing both daughter and granddaughter, George spoke again, seeing they did not accept what had transpired. “Seeing that you put a clause into the contract, I shall also put something. Claire, you will return to your room, your phone will be confiscated, and the family doctor will be called to ensure that you are indeed chaste. Then every month after, for the duration of the three years, you shall undergo an examination to prove your purity. If you lose your virginity during this three-year contract and it’s proven not Blake’s child, you will divorce Blake, and both mother and daughters shall be banished from the family. All family accounts shall be stripped from them, leaving them desolate. Hearing this, both of them seemed to be deflated. Their scheme had been seen, and they no longer had any hope. Blake had just left the manor and got into his car. It wasn’t the best, but it did get him where he had to go. Sitting there for a while, he finally let out a deep sigh. ‘What the hell? I’m getting married; to boot, it’s a contract marriage. Well, all marriages are under contract if you think about it. To honor and cherish, in sickness and health, aren’t all these binding contracts between two people?’ Thought Blake as he started his little-used Chevy car and guided it back into the city. ‘I’ll just stop by the office and drop off my tablet.’ Blake then drove his car to Elon Delivery Services. He parked in front and walked in, thinking. ‘I came here to lay low; it’s the only business under the family’s radar. Been here only for a few months and have already seen a lot of problems in the company. First, it all stems from my boss; he’s embezzling from the company. Second, he’s causing problems by taking advantage of the women who come to work here. The ones who stay have to satisfy him, and those who leave are those who decline him. The only one he doesn’t mess with is Sara, the clerk, I haven’t found her secret, but he is very respectful towards her. Oh well, it’s none of my business for the moment.’ Blake walks over to Sara; she’s a year younger than Blake, wearing business attire; she’s of small height, with red hair, fair complexion, and wears glasses hiding her green eyes. She has a temperament of all business and no fun, but she’s kind to him, so he greets her kindly. “Hey Sara, I have that last delivery report to turn in. Can I get my daily pay?” asked Blake with all smiles. “Hey Blake, sorry, but you must see Mr. Wilson. What took you so long?” Said Sara, not even looking up. “Well, I had to wait for the client’s signature and was delayed.” Said Blake handing in his pad to her. “Blake, get your ass in here!” Bellowed a middle-aged man with a receding hairline and bloated belly that the buttons could hardly cover. “Yes, Mr. Wilson, heading there now. See you, Sara.” Said Blake starting to walk towards the door that read office. Just then, you see Sara finally look up, admiring the back of the young man who just left, smiling and shaking her head. ‘Well, Mr. Elon, you still don’t recognize me? Maybe it’s for the best; I wonder if your family knows you are back in the States. I’ll keep this to myself; for now. It seems he doesn’t want them to know yet.’ Thought Sara as she started back on her computer. “You wanted to see me, Mr. Wilson?” Asked Blake walking into the office. “Close the door and have a seat; I need to discuss something with you.” Said Mr. Wilson sitting behind his desk.
Chapter 4 Chapter 4
Blake closed the door and sat on a wooden chair in front of the desk. It was a fairly spacious office with an oak desk, leather seat, a couch on the side, and filing cabinets. A window with shades was behind Mr. Wilson as he sat, giving a vibe from an old movie. “Blake, what happened during your last delivery?” Asked Mr. Wilson, sternly looking at Blake. “I don’t know what you mean?” Asked Blake with a blank expression. “I just got off the phone with a Mr. Weston stating that you will be reporting back to his home tomorrow morning and that you will not be able to work that day. Who did you offend? Do you know who that person is?” asked Mr. Wilson getting angry. “It’s the goddam Weston Family; they are one of the most influential families in the city.”“Sorry, Mr. Wilson, but I was going to explain to you as soon as I got back that I was not going to make it into work tomorrow, but I guess grandfather beat me to it.” Said Blake without showing any concern. “Grandfather, who’s your grandfather? What the hell is going on?” asked Mr. Wilson, calming down. “Well, I’ll marry Mr. George Weston’s granddaughter Claire Dalton in the morning, so I guess I’ll be his grandson-in-law by then.” Replied Blake rubbing his chin in wonderment. “Grandson-in-law?” Asked Mr. Wilson, realizing that the man in front of him would be mighty when he marries George Weston’s granddaughter. “Yea, Mr. Weston took a shine to me when I got there and betrothed his granddaughter.” Said Blake with a smile on his face. ‘I’ll not tell him it’s a contract wedding, and being a live-in son-in-law is not something to be proud of as it is. In their eyes, I’ll be trash, lower than a dog, but this is great so I can hide behind the Weston family.’ Thought Blake, still smiling. “Okay, well, why don’t you be on your way, and here is your daily salary? How about I give you a bonus, seeing it’s going to be your wedding day, and congratulations, my boy.” Said Mr. Wilson getting up and heading towards the company safe. “That won’t be necessary, Mr. Wilson. I don’t need a bonus; my wages would be okay.” Replied Blake, also getting up. “Nonsense. What did you plan on wearing on your big day?”“I guess my regular clothes. I don’t have any formal wear.” Replied Blake, realizing that all he had was normal wear, not a single designer item to his name. “This won’t do; you reflect the company and me as a company representative. How can I let my best employee go to his wedding looking like a country bumkin? I’ll meet you early here, and we’ll get you a nice suit.” Replied Mr. Wilson handing Blake his check and a stack of hundreds. “Here is a thousand dollars for your bonus.”“Thank you, Mr. Wilson. I’ll see you in the morning then.” Said Blake heading back to the door. “Yes, get a good night’s sleep, my boy, don’t forget to come here in the morning; we’ll get you all set up for your big day.” Said Mr. Wilson standing in the doorway. ‘What an opportunity for me. I’ll get close to him; then I’ll be close to the biggest family in the city. The prestige of knowing him will bring many benefits to me. I wonder what medicine that old man took to get this boy to marry into his family? That kid is fortunate, I bet it could have been anyone of my delivery guys, and they would have been picked. Better keep this to myself. It’ll cause him trouble later.’ Thought Mr. Wilson to himself as he walked back to his desk. ‘Many benefits indeed.’ Blake said good night to Sara when walking out. She only gave him a subtle wave, as she didn’t want to be bothered. He got into his car and started the engine. “Sir? What’s this about a big day with Blake?” Sara asked, taking her attention away from the computer. “He’s getting married to Claire Dalton, George Weston’s granddaughter.” He said happily while closing the office door. This reality was a shock to Sara. ‘When did Blake meet with Claire Dalton, much less decide to marry?’ Sara returned to the computer screen, and a lone tear escaped her eye. Back George Weston finished his meal without any more disruptions. Had Claire go to her room to await the doctor’s examination, he went into his study carrying the large envelope that held his family’s and company’s future. George Weston’s study could be seen as a posh room with books lining one side of the wall, a large fireplace on the other, a large oak desk with dark tones, and a plush seat behind. He took the documents out of the envelope and thoroughly examined the contents. He knew his decision was the right course of action to save his company and family’s status as one of the number one families in the city. Four families could be considered at the top. The Anderson family in real estate, the Dalton in government, the Syrum family in the underworld, and of course, the Weston family in the entertainment business, only to be upstaged by the Elon family, who has their hands into everything. No one can come close to that family in assets or wealth, but they have not been stationed here in Swanville. But it was rumored that they would start an enterprise later in the year, and everyone wanted that piece of the pie, including George. Busy going over the documents, a knock on the door was heard. “Yes, enter.” Said George, not looking up. A middle-aged man with a complete set of blond hair, reasonably handsome, wearing a designer-tailored suit, walked into the study and stood in front of the desk, not moving or saying a single word until he was acknowledged. George’s first-born son Quinton Weston, who questioned George at the dinner table about the Anderson marriage proposal, waited for his father to finish. Finally, George looked up. “Yes, what’s on your mind, son?”“Father, what the hell? Why did you refuse the marriage between Claire and the Anderson kid? We could have used their power and merged into one of the top leading families that could have even rivaled the Elon family.” Complained Quinton Weston. “We could have even surpassed the Elon family? He, he, son look at this document and tell me what could I have done?” asked George throwing the document into his son’s hands. Looking at the documents and flipping over the pages, his eyes got more extensive, and a feeling of panic swept over him as he continued to read. Cold sweat formed down his back, then anger infused with his terror. “The gall of those Andersons, don’t they realize what they were proposing? This would have crippled our family and resources.” Said Quinton sitting in a chair, not able to stand any longer. “Now you understand what I did and why this should never be brought to light.” Said George walking over and extending his hand to retrieve the documents. Quinton handed the papers over to his father, who took them, walked to a large fireplace, and threw the pieces into the fire forever, destroying the items within. “The Andersons will lose face tomorrow and never divulge what they propose to use with the union between Claire and Steve.” Said George looking into the flames as the last papers burned into ash. “But father, after the three years are up, they will return to us again. I don’t believe that Claire will fall for that country bumpkin.” Said Quinton looking at the back of his father. “A lot can happen within three years; a woman’s heart can change even within a moment’s notice. My wife was very adamant when we married, but after three years, it softened, and she gave birth to you. Believe it or not, our future lies in that man’s hands for the moment. I have decided to give them a villa as a wedding present to get them closer together. It would not be good for a live-in grandson-in-law to live with us, and they would never bond here.” Said George turning towards his son. Blake returned to his tiny one-room apartment, showered, and got ready for bed. It was one hell of a day, and he was getting married tomorrow, and it seemed so surreal to him as he fell asleep.
Chapter 5 Chapter 5
Blake awoke early that day, washed and ate a light breakfast, and headed to Elon Delivery Services to meet with Mr. Wilson. When he arrived, Mr. Wilson led him to one of the best shops in the city and bought him a costly three-piece suit and leather shoes. Later he looked into the mirror, and even he was astonished at his image. “I clean up pretty nicely.” It’s been a while since Blake had dressed in a suit other than his military uniform. “That you do. Now let’s get you to your wedding, shall we.” Mr. Wilson then patted his shoulder as they walked towards the counter and paid the clerk. Blake chuckled under his breath, but it was getting pretty late, and he had promised to arrive around seven. He then went straight to Weston Manor after dropping Mr. Wilson back at the company. “Where is that boy? It’s almost seven. Did he run away? I swear I’ll hunt him down if he doesn’t show.” George was looking at his watch as he muttered to himself. Claire was in a long plain-looking white gown that shaped perfectly to her figure as she sat looking at her grandfather, getting more upset as the time ticked by. She was upset also; not only was she forced back into her room the night before, but she was monitored, and she and her mother’s phones were confiscated, so they couldn’t even call Steve to let him know what was happening. Just then, Johnson walked in. “Master, Mr. Elon has arrived.” When Johnson announced Blake’s arrival, you could see the tension melt away on George’s face, and he relaxed considerably. All this was to save his family and business. “Good, good, send him in.” Blake then walked into the grand room, where everyone was sitting. Everyone gasped as this handsome man walked in. Even Claire had to look twice, and she wavered a little as she looked upon her future husband. ‘What am I thinking? Even a dog will look good if you dress him up.’ Claire thought to herself, calming her feelings. “Blake, my boy, please sit down on the sofa and let’s have some tea, shall we.”“Grandfather, tea would be great.” Blake showed a composed, manly aura at this moment when he sat down, and Johnson poured him a cup of tea. “Blake, I hope you don’t mind. I added a clause within the contract to protect you and the interests of the couple.”“Oh, and what should that be? I thought all was talked through last night.”“To ensure Claire stays pure during these three years, she has to prove it every month until the contract is up. If there is a breach of contract, she, her sister, and her mother will be disowned by the family, but in doing so, she also specified that you would not be able to do anything that will dishonor her or the family.”“I understand, if you don’t mind, I’ll look over the contract, and if it’s to my liking, I shall sign it and then the marriage license.” Blake was handed the contract and looked over it thoroughly. It was very straightforward and very binding. He would receive three million dollars if the marriage is a failure, and if he breaks the contract, he would owe Claire fifteen million for compensation. In contrast, if she fails the contract, she and Blake will divorce, and her family will be out of the prominent family. It was pretty cut and dry, so Blake signed the contract and handed it to Claire. Not a word was spoken between them as they sat there reading and signing. Next was the marriage license. After signing, they were legally husband and wife on paper. “Now that the formalities are over. The gift, I will be giving you two a two-bedroom villa in the suburbs, and you both can move into it today.”“What? No way, she will not live alone with this peasant!” Claire’s mother yelled out her dissatisfaction with their moving in together. “It’s only natural that they live together. They’re a couple now, and they must have their privacy.” George refused his daughter’s claim. “I don’t care. Why can’t they live here with us as a family? We can look after one another.”“Yes, grandfather, I don’t want to move. I like living here with you and everyone else.” Claire started to complain while moving closer to George. “Enough, it has been decided. You, Claire, are old enough, and you’re not a child anymore. It’s good to have a husband and to live with him on your own.”“I refuse. I will not have my daughter living alone, I will go with them, and nothing you say will change my mind.”“Now you listen here…” George was annoyed at his daughter for interfering in the relationship. Blake spoke up and interrupted them. “Grandfather, it’s fine if mom wants to stay with us, it’s okay. We as the younger generation should look after our parents when they get older.”“Who are you calling, mom? I will never acknowledge you as my son-in-law, and who’s old?” Just as Julie rolled her eyes, George spoke to Blake. “Are you sure, son?”“Yes, it’s fine. It’ll make Claire more comfortable if I agree to her mother staying.”“What say you, Claire?” George then looked at his granddaughter. “I still don’t want to go; I love staying here with all of you, but if mom is coming, then I’m fine as well.”“Then it’s settled. You should move in together today after the great wedding feast.” Just as they got up to go into the dining room, there was an uproar in the foyer. “Claire, where are you! Come out here now. I want to see you!” A young man a little shorter than Blake with handsome features, dark brown hair, and blue eyes that actors would die for, he was the envy of men and fantasies of women. Donning a designer-tailored suit, he yelled that he must see Claire in the foyer. It was Steve Anderson, and he was trying to contact Claire all night and morning. He came quickly to the manor to check on her as Johnson tried to calm him down. “Please, sir, do you not know where this is? Please control yourself.” Just then, a slap was heard coming from the foyer. George was the first to arrive and saw his butler holding his cheek that had just been slapped. “What the hell is going on in here? Do we the Westons not mean shit to you?” George was angry at the scene that was taking place. “Grandfather, where is Claire? I haven’t been able to contact her since yesterday afternoon. Nothing has happened to her, has there?” The young man was frantic, walking towards George. “Who the hell is your grandfather? Listen and listen well. Claire is no longer your concern, so you might as well head home.” Just then, Claire walked into the foyer. Without realizing it, all her emotions came to the surface. Not caring about her surroundings, she ran into his arms and started to cry. “What’s wrong, Claire? What happened.” George saw his granddaughter in his arms of Steve and was furious. “Get your hands off of my granddaughter this instant! Claire, do you not want to save my face! What a disgrace to your family and new husband!” Hearing her grandfather, she pulled away from Steve and held her head down, not looking up with tears streaming onto her face and dropping to the floor. “I’m so sorry, grandfather. His sincerity in finding me just moved me.” Claire muttered, hoping the man beside her would take her away from this nightmare.
Chapter 6 Chapter 6
Shocked by what he had just heard, Steve didn’t realize that he was too late to take Claire as his wife. “Claire, you will go to your husband this instance and stand by his side,” George stated angrily, coldly looking at Steve. Claire could only obey her grandfather and walked towards Blake, who had just arrived at the foyer. “Claire, what’s going on? Who is he? Grandfather, can someone please tell me what is going on?” Steve, who still couldn’t comprehend what had happened, asked franticly. “Steve, I’ve already told you that Claire is now married to this gentleman. She is no longer your concern, and you will break all contact with her from here on out.” George replied coldly at Steve. Steve was in denial, shaking his head. “This is impossible. I don’t believe you. How can this happen? Claire, I love you, and you love me, you are to be my wife, this is some joke, haha, you got me, Claire come here to me, don’t play with me.” Claire stood by Blake and held her head down with tears dropping onto the floor where she stood. She could only shiver as the sobs came rolling upon her. This was her wedding day. It was supposed to be the most joyous occasion that a young woman dreams about, but this was a total nightmare. She married a stranger, and the man she loved was standing before her, destined not to be with her. “Sir, I believe you need to leave, as my wife is not feeling well, so I suggest you forget her and move on.” Blake finally spoke and put his hand on Claire’s waist, bringing her closer to him. Claire froze on the spot, her true love was in front of her, and this man she hardly knew had put his hand on her seductively, so she didn’t know what to do but stood there with her head still looking down. “You bastard, let go of my wife. How could you touch her!” Steve was furious at this time. How could he have another man touch what was undoubtedly his? He could not hold his anger anymore; he lost his love to another and laid his hands upon her. “Why can’t I? We are wed. She is my wife, not yours, so I again suggest you leave with dignity.”“Bastard, I’ll kill you!” Steve then ran towards Blake with rage in his eyes. Blake stepped away from Claire, fearing she would get hurt by Steve’s advances. Waiting for Steve to make his move, he didn’t disappoint. Steve must have trained; his hits were precise and calculated, but his opponent was Blake. He was a soldier of war, his body was tempered, and he was considered the God of War by his peers. Blake just stood there. Everyone thought he must have been frightened and too scared to move. Steve punched came towards Blake’s face, but Steve’s movements were like slow motion. He just turned slightly to the left when the fist was going to connect, but with Blake’s reflexes, it never did. With a few more jabs coming from Steve, it was evident that every throw was missed, and Blake just slightly dodged. “Are you even a man? If all you can do is dodge, why don’t you fight!” Steve was getting flustered and frustrated, and he was losing his stamina in throwing his punches at this man, who he couldn’t even lay a single blow. “According to you, I need to retaliate to prove that I’m a man. Well, I shall grant your wish and show you how much of a man I truly am.” Blake then stood still, and when Steve came near to throw another punch, Blake blocked it and followed with a tight slap upon Steve’s face making him turn a complete one-eighty and fall to the floor. ‘What happened? One slap, and he’s on the floor. What power does this man have? I know Steve trained and is a black belt in jujitsu.’ Claire’s thoughts were a mess, and she had mixed feelings. She was awed and shocked that Blake was able to handle himself, but on the other hand, was deeply saddened that Steve was not able to take her away from all of this. She then ran towards Steve and tried to help him up. “If you so much as touch him, you and your family will be disowned!” George pointed at Claire, who had rushed over and bent down to give Steve a hand. “Father, don’t you think you’re too cruel?” Julie walked up to her father and asked. “Me being cruel, what about her? She wants to cuckold her new husband on their wedding day?” George was ecstatic over his granddaughter’s behavior in front of the family. Blake then went over and stopped his wife from helping her lover from the floor. “Do you want our family to be disowned and penniless? My delivery job only supports myself, not a family of four, much less college tuitions.” Hearing this, Claire ran to her mother and wept into her shoulder. “Mr. Anderson, you surely have figured out your dilemma here. Why don’t you head back and rethink the situation? Do you want to take Claire, her mother, and sister away, making them disowned from the family?” Steve looked up at the man that had stolen his wife. It was true. He didn’t want to have a disowned family holding him back. Much less, his father wanted him to marry into the Weston family to gain control of their assets. He got himself up, dusted himself off, straitened his tie, and stood straight. “If this is how it is, then so be it. I shall remove myself first.” Said Steve as he headed towards the door. “Steve! Wait, this marriage is only for three years, and he cannot touch me during that time. Please wait for me.” Claire cried out to him in desperation. She had divulged this marriage as a contract for three years which pissed off George. “Bitch, shut your mouth this instant, or I shall have no granddaughter!” George bellowed at Claire as he walked over towards her. Claire was terrified when her grandfather approached her and slapped her for the first time in her life. She could only cry even harder into her mother’s arms, feeling utterly depressed. Steve then turned around when he heard this and gave a smile. “So, this is a false marriage. Okay, Claire, I shall wait for you. I, Steve Anderson, shall return and reclaim my wife in three years. So long as she is still pure, I can wait.” Steve then walked away from the manor with only one thought, I will be back to reclaim what’s mine, and we Andersons will control the Westons. Seeing Steve leave but proclaiming that he would wait for her, Claire was delighted at that moment until she looked upon Blake staring at her. “What, don’t you see, that’s what a real man is like. He will wait for me, and when he returns, I will be his.”“Whether true or not, who’s to say what the years will bring. We may fall for each other, or we shall fall altogether. Either way, I shall be truthful and honor my commitment to you and the family. I’m hungry.” Blake then walked into the dining area to eat with the rest of the family in tow. After a few words with George about where the villa was, he, Claire, and her mother went out to take a look. He took his car, and they took theirs, into the suburbs outside the city. Neighboring homes surrounded the villa with families living all around them. It was a quiet neighborhood, and their lovely two-bedroom house with a single bath, living, dining, and kitchen was among them. Frowning at Blake getting out of his used car and the luxurious area, Julie thought he would have to hide his car in the garage so that no one would see it.
Chapter 7 Chapter 7
Mother and daughter talked about how luxurious the home was and how tiring it would be to keep this home cleaned with all the detailed chores. A two-bedroom house with a single bath, living, dining, and kitchen was a lot to handle for them. Blake just let them talk, paying them no mind as he looked at the home smiling. “I don’t know. We could get someone to come once a week and take care of the home. What do you think, mother?”“Why spend unwanted money when we have someone right here? We’ll give him an allowance to pay the utilities and groceries for the week. He can take care of the cleaning and cooking himself.”“You’re right; it would be better and cheaper to have him do it. He could at least show some worth.” While the mother and daughter had made up their mind that Blake would be the one responsible for the chores, he went into the most oversized bedroom to have a look. Only then did Claire notice that he had left them and went into the bedroom, so she followed him in. “Hey, what are you doing? This room will be for my mother and me, and you will not be allowed here, do you understand?” Claire scolded him with her arms on her chest. “Claire dear, I don’t think that will be possible. The mother needs her privacy. Why don’t you take the next room, and he takes the couch?” Blake had seen the couch, at least the most petite sofa he had ever seen, so he protested right then and there. “Are you both out of your minds? I will not be staying on the couch. If anything, I will share my room with my wife, just as it’s meant to be.”“You, you. How dare you think of staying in the same room as me.” Claire protested at the very thought of sharing a room with a stranger. “Well, I guess I will have to inform grandfather that this will not work, and mom will have to move out.”“Move out? I’m not going to leave you alone with my daughter in the same home, and I’m certainly not allowing you to sleep in the same room as her!” Julie also protested against the very idea. “Well, I don’t see any way around it, she’s my wife, and it’s only natural to sleep in the same room.”“Okay, Claire, you will be sleeping with mom from now on.” Julie reluctantly folded, for the idea of him sleeping with her daughter was just unheard of for her. So that was how their first night went. Mother and daughter didn’t sleep in the same area in their large family estate, so she did not know that her mother could snore so loudly and powerfully. Claire thought the roof would have fallen in if given a chance, so she didn’t sleep well that first night in the home together. On the other hand, Blake had a very peaceful sleep due to the soundproof walls. The following day, Blake got up before daybreak, went into the spacious backyard, started exercising, cleaned himself up, started the chores for the day, and got breakfast ready for the two women and himself. He had lived alone for a long time, became quite familiar with the kitchen, and was a decent cook. When the two women finally arrived, they looked at the meal in front of them and drooled as the meal gave off a great aroma. “What’s this then?” Asked Julie as she tried to hide her salivation and anticipation of the food in front of her. “It should be called breakfast,” Blake replied as he started to grab some of the food for himself. “I know what it’s called. I didn’t know that you could cook,” Julie answered him in a condescending tone. “I learned when I left home. Please have a seat and begin before it gets cold.” Julie and Claire sat down and didn’t say a word as they ate their meal. They both looked at one another, and a faint smile was seen on both faces. It was the best meal that they had ever tasted. Even the top chefs in the estate couldn’t compare to Blake. When it was done, they didn’t even praise him for breakfast, and they just got up and walked away, leaving the dishes to him. After taking the plates to the kitchen and washing them, he got ready for work. “And, where do you think you’re going?” Julie asked as she sat on the couch looking at the television, flipping the channels. “I’m going to work; I still have a job, you know.”“Humph, some job you have, why don’t you quit and stay here and take care of the house.” She said, not looking off the television program she had decided on. “That won’t do. I still need the work to compensate for the utilities and groceries, and what you two allowed is not enough.” Blake then walked out, not looking back at Julie. “Where is Blake going?” Claire asked as she left her and her mother’s room seeing the back of Blake as he walked out of the house. “He said to work, can you believe that? He claims we don’t give him enough allowance for the house.”“Well, it’ll just help with finances. Just let it be. For now, I’m off to the company. Love you, mom.” Claire then kissed her mom on the cheek and headed out. A week had passed just like that, but you could see the fatigue on Claire’s face from not getting enough sleep, and she made a decision. She had to get to the other room. After dinner, Blake cleaned the kitchen and dishes while Claire made arrangements in the other room. When Blake returned to his room, he was surprised to see Claire sitting on the bed and a quilt and pillow on the floor. “You will sleep on the floor while I sleep on the bed. If you have any ulterior motives towards me, I warn you I will not hesitate to kill you.” Hatred could be seen coming from Claire’s eyes as she spoke. “So, what made you decide to sleep here with me?” Blake asked as he headed towards the makeshift bed. “It doesn’t concern you, just know I will not hesitate to kill you if you touch me.”“I promise you it is the furthest thing in my mind to touch you, princess. Why would I anyway.” Hearing this from Blake made her even madder at him. How dare he think he’s more than a dog to her? She then calmed down and lay in the bed. Blake took the light off, got under his quilt, and laid down when the door bursts open, and Julie ran in. “Claire, why are you in here? Get out this instant!” Julie realized that her daughter was not in the room with her when she decided to go to bed and ran into Blake’s room in a panic. “Mom, I’m sorry, but I can’t do it anymore. You snore too loudly, and I can’t get any rest.”“Snore, I don’t snore. How could you say such a thing in front of a stranger?”“Mom, go to bed. I have the situation under control. Blake will sleep on the floor while I have the bed. See, he’s over there, and I have a deterrent in case he has any ideas.” Claire pulled a rather large kitchen knife from under her pillow. Julie saw this was how it was. Still glaring at Blake, she left them be, returning to her room. “You know you can be at ease. When I said I would not touch you, I meant it, so rest easy,” Blake said to Claire when everything had settled down for the night. “Humph.” That was all the reply he received. Claire couldn’t believe that what he said was the truth. Wasn’t he a man? Didn’t she tempt him at all? The night went on, and they both slumbered, and it was the first time Claire had slept peacefully since she arrived. Blake got up the following day, got into his daily routine, and it continued like this for the three strangers living under the same roof.
Chapter 8 Chapter 8
In a flash, a year and eleven months had passed. A pandemic had taken over the nation in twenty-twenty, and many had suffered. The small business was significantly impacted, and so was the entertainment business. Dynamic Entertainment was at a significant loss during that year. The company can barely make ends meet, even with the twenty-twenty-one recovery this year. George called a great meeting for the company, and everyone was in the conference room. Claire was sitting at the back while Quinton and his son Henry were seated on both sides of George, with the remaining board members sitting around the table. “Okay, I won’t beat around the bush here. It was brought to my attention that we’re in a deficit of thirty million dollars, and there will be trouble with the new regulations out there right now. Any ideas on where we can get more investors for the company.” No one said anything but looked around with concern on their faces. Whispers were heard throughout the meeting room, but no one took the initiative to come forward. “No one has any suggestions? Quinton, what about you? Are you not supposed to be the acting COO of the company? What do you suggest?” George hopefully asked his son. “Father, it’s not that I don’t have any suggestions, but with how the nation is, there is not much along the lines of Entertainment to be done. We can’t book for large crowds like we used to, even with the mandates being lifted. Our reserves are running low, and the people we have under contract are looking to move on when their contracts are over. This may be the end of Dynamic; we were hit too hard with the pandemic.” Quinton lowered his head when he proclaimed the company’s downfall. “Grandfather, I may have an option,” Henry spoke out, looking at his grandfather. “Oh, what do you suggest?”“I heard a rumor that Elon Trust was getting into entertainment, and they’re looking for companies to invest in, but I heard it’s almost impossible to see Mr. Wheaton the COO of the company.”“Well, who among you is willing to go see Mr. Wheaton over at Elon Trust?” George looked across the board members. Again no one would voice their approval for this task at hand. Everyone knew that getting an investment from Elon was challenging, much less to see Mr. Wheaton. Only then did Henry voice his opinion with a sinister smile. “Grandfather, why don’t we have Claire go and get this done? She’s in marketing, and isn’t this her department?”“Grandfather, I protest. Henry was the one who came up with the suggestion, and it’s only befitting that he is the one to carry it out.” Replied Claire, who knew too well that it would be almost impossible for her to see the COO of Elon Trust, much less get them to invest in their company. “Silence, it only benefits that the person in charge of the marketing department go and get a contract with other investors… I have decided that Claire will lead a team to persuade the Elon Trust to invest in the company. All our hopes are onto you, my dear, all dismissed.” George had told everyone with a severe tone. Henry was ecstatic. He thought of many ways to get one over Claire. She was better than him in everything she did in the company and found better talents than him, mainly her marketing ideas. All the entertainers loved her for her strict but fair attitude. While all he wanted to do was play with the female entertainers and push his authority around the office. Outside the conference room, he waited for his cousin to emerge. “Well, it looks like all our hopes will be on you there, Claire. I want to be the first to congratulate you on getting this deal done,” Henry smirked as he said it to her. “Don’t think I don’t know what you have done, Henry. This was all your idea. Why don’t you help me with the proposal to send to Elon Trust for approval.” Claire had answered him while walking back towards her office. “There’s no way that I can accommodate you on that request. I have more important things to do.”“More important than working to achieve a partnership with the most influential business in the city to help stabilize our business?” Claire looked at her cousin with disdain in her eyes. She knew very well that he was going out and partying with his friends and entertainers. “So, who is she, who caught your eye this time, the brunet or the blond entertainer from the web department?”“Neither, It’s Miss. Samantha from Global Entertainment, if we can gain her over onto our side, it’ll boost our internet ratings. She’s rising within the video community, very popular.”“Samantha, not Samantha Kingsley?”“The the same, what do you think? Did I hit the high road or what?”“Or what? Not only is she very popular in the video community but also on the Porn Holder site and My Fans site as well. She’ll do anything for publicity, even sell her body. I don’t think she would be a good fit for our company, and I don’t think grandfather will approve.”“You’re just jealous that I can bring new talent to the company. We’ll see who has the last laugh.” Henry then walked away, not to be bothered by her anymore. Claire went into her office and called all of her subordinates to discuss the proposal they were tasked with. After an hour of brainstorming, they all left her office when the workday ended. Walking out of her office and locking up, she ran into her uncle. “Claire, have you gathered your team yet? This is very important for the company.”“Yes, Uncle, we have been going over the research into Elon Trust, and we have verified that they have posted that they are looking to invest in the entertainment field.”“Good, we all have faith in you and your team. By the way, how is your mother been? Isn’t Tabitha graduating this year?”“Mother is doing good.” Claire also boasted about her little sister. “Tabitha, she is indeed graduating with honors and will make a great addition to the team here at the company.” Tabitha is going to college for a business degree, and she was gone for the entire duration due to the pandemic that plagued the nation. “And what of your husband, is he still working at that delivery company? I thought they would have gone out of business with this pandemic.”“Humph, what husband, don’t mention it. That trash is still working as a delivery guy. You would have thought he would have shown some ambition to get higher in the company by now. The only thing that has changed is that their business boomed with online trading.” With disdain for her husband, she replied to her uncle. “Well, we will always see you at the family gathering this weekend. I hear father will be announcing something big during the meal.” Finished with their goodbyes, they went their separate ways. On Blake’s side, he had just finished delivering his last package when his phone rang. Seeing that it was his mother-in-law, he quickly answered it since she berated him with insults the last time he had hesitated. “Yes, mom, what can I do for you?”“Who’s your mother? Listen, we’re out of groceries; pick some up.” She sniped back at him as she always did.
Chapter 9 Chapter 9
“How are we out? I just bought some two days ago?” Regretting it the moment he said it. “That was two days ago. Do you want me to starve? Listen, if my daughter didn’t marry you, you wouldn’t be able to eat what we are eating in your lifetime. Get some steaks. I’m now in the mood for steak.”“Yes, mom, I just finished. I’ll run by and grab some steak for tonight.” It was all he could do to answer her. “Humph.” That was all she replied when she hung up. Blake could only smile as he looked at his phone and put it away. He went to his car and drove to Elon Delivery Services for his daily pay, or getting steaks for his wife and mother-in-law would have been troublesome. With the bit of money his wife supplies him each week, he had to depend on his pay to accommodate their desired food and daily upkeep. Arriving, he gave his pleasantries to Sara, received his pay without delay, and left for the grocery store. Coming home, he saw his mother-in-law on the couch watching her program. He greeted his mother-in-law as he walked toward the kitchen. “I’m back. I’ll start dinner as soon as I put the groceries away.” ‘Humph, trying to starve me is all you are good at. Hurry with dinner. Claire will be here any minute from work. That girl works too hard. Why did she have to marry trash like you? She could have been served hand and foot if only she had married into the Andersons.” Julie berated Blake as soon as he entered, and she always reminded him that he would never be better than Steve Anderson. She wanted Steve as her good-son-in-law. “You know Steve went out of state to branch out the family business, and he’s now the director of the real estate branch over in Missouri. Now there is someone who shows promise. I will never understand that old man’s thinking in letting you marry my sweet daughter.” Blake had endured this since he got married, and he got used to it and didn’t even comment, and he just continued preparing dinner. When it was almost finished, Claire walked into the home, took off her high heels, and flopped onto the couch with her head held back and her eyes closed. “Blake, what am I not seeing? How could you be so slow.” Blake ran into the living room with a nice chilled glass of red wine that he had prepared for his wife when she got home. She would drink wine before her meal and unwind from her workday. “Sorry, my dear, I was preparing the last part of the meal when you walked in. Here’s your glass already chilled for you.”“Humph, I don’t know what I will do with you.” Claire responded to him, holding the glass in one hand and swirling the liquid to allow it to breathe. Blake then turned on his heel and went back into the kitchen to finish dinner. “Claire dear, did you hear about Steve? He went to Missouri and started a branch for Anderson’s business. Oh, why couldn’t you have been sooner in getting that man.” Said Julie as she sat next to her daughter, looking at her expression of shock. “When did this happen? Why didn’t he let me know?” Claire had asked her mother. Claire has been secretly seeing Steve since her marriage. They would sneak around, have meals with each other, and walk in the park, getting gifts from him, just like a married couple. “I just found out this afternoon. His mother had called to give me the news. He left just last night, something about a merger at that branch, and it was very sudden.”“Dinner is served. Please come and get it while it’s still hot.” Blake had just entered the dining room with the meals when mother and daughter stopped talking. “I’m not hungry right now. I’ll go into my room for now.” Claire got up, left the area, went into the room she and Blake shared, and locked the door. “Mom, what’s with Claire? Is she not feeling well?”“She’s just tired, is all. She must have had a rough day today. I’m sure she will eat later, and who’s your mother? Please could you refrain from calling me that?” Julie had sat down to eat, still staring down at Blake. Claire had gone into her room and sat on the bed. She looked on her phone, and there were no messages from Steve that day. Claire felt depressed and alone at that moment, and the tears started to fall heavily, throwing herself onto her pillow. While she was crying, her phone lit up, and she received a text from Steve. Seeing this, she wiped her eyes, and with excitement, she looked closely at his text. ‘Claire, I had to fly to Missouri to handle the business, and I will be here for the full duration of the crisis. Please forgive me for not calling or texting you, but I have been busy.’ Steve. ‘It’s quite alright, dear. I know you are busy with the company. Please keep in touch. I miss you and love you.’ Claire. Claire texted back as she laid back down, looking back at his text, feeling lonely. Steve had just received Claire’s text back when a slender arm wrapped around his chest and tried to pull him from his side position in the bed. “Hold on, let me put my phone away, dear, then we can continue. Okay, so, where were we?” Steve had turned over and looked at the beautiful woman’s face as she smiled lovingly into his eyes. She was the daughter of a business partner looking to merge with Steve’s company. She caressed his cheek and gave him a passionate kiss on the lips. “Dear, who did you just text?”“Don’t you worry, it was just work? They can’t do anything without me, and I had to confirm the transactions from today.” He lied to her and replied by kissing her back. After finishing their meals, Blake returned the dishes to the kitchen and cleaned up when Claire entered the dining room. “Blake, I’m ready for my meal; please serve it to me.” She said, walking out of their room and sitting by the dining table, waiting for him to serve her meal. Blake then took her dinner and warmed it up in the microwave oven. After it was warmed up, he brought it in front of Claire. “What took you so long? Do you have any sense of time? Why did you make me wait for so long?” Claire stated as she looked at her steak that was reheated. She was upset about Steve and wanted to vent her anger on Blake. “Princess, if you had been here when it was done, you wouldn’t have had to wait for me to reheat it for you.”
Chapter 10 Chapter 10
“Don’t you talk to my daughter like that? You should be grateful that she can tolerate the slop you feed us daily.” Julie had said from the couch, watching her program. “I’ll go washup,” Blake replied as he headed to the bathroom to shower off the day’s work. “Humph, the nerve of him, how could he talk to you like that? I will give him a piece of my mind when he gets out.”“Mom, don’t bother. Once trash, always trash. Just let it go, and I’m not in the mood right now.” Blake finished cleaning up and headed into his and Claire’s room for the night. He had to sleep on the floor for almost two years while she slept on the bed with a knife under her pillow. He could hear his wife tell her mother that she would wash up and head to bed. A half-hour later, he listened to his wife open the door, get into bed, check for her security, and finally fall asleep. The following day, Blake starts his routine like clockwork and chores and makes breakfast for the two women. When it’s finished, he lays out their meals. A few minutes later, the two women arrive and start breakfast. As Blake was finishing up his meal, his mother-in-law gave him a demand. “Blake, you are to pick up Tabitha from the train station this afternoon. She should arrive around two or three, spending the week with us before her finals.”“Mom, I have to work. Couldn’t you go and pick her up?” Blake asked as he still needed to work to accommodate the living expenses. “What is it for you to get off early to go and pick up your sister-in-law? Besides, I can’t, I have an appointment this afternoon that can’t be missed, and I can’t ask Claire. She’s too busy with her work at the office.” Julie explained that she wanted to have her hair done that afternoon. ‘What’s the difference between my work and hers? Just because she receives more money than I do?’ thought Blake answering his mother-in-law with a simple nod of acceptance. Blake left the two women, got into his car, and drove to work. When arriving there, he walked over to Sara and greeted her kindly. “Morning, Sara. How goes your day so far?”“Hello, Blake, I have the morning route for you already.” That was about how their mornings were, he would kindly greet her, and she would give him his route for the morning. Pretty cut and dry as far as their work relations went. “Oh, I will need a leave of absence for this afternoon; my sister-in-law will be arriving, and I’m the only one to pick her up.”“You will have to approve it by Mr. Wilson, but he’s busy right now with a new delivery person.” Sara said, not looking at him as she continued her computer work. “Male or female?”“You’ll see in 5,4,3,2,1.” Just as she stopped counting, the office door was slung open, and a messy girl quickly walked out of the office, with Mr. Wilson tidying himself up red in the face. “See, if you get anywhere in this business with that attitude.”“He’s free now. You may see him.” Replied Sara, still never looking away from her work. ‘How does she do that?’ thought Blake to himself. Upon closing the office door, Blake approached Mr. Wilson and greeted him. “Morning, Sir, I wonder if I could bother you for a second?”“Hu, oh, it’s you, Blake. Please come in.”“Thank you, Sir. I wondered if I could have a leave of absence for this afternoon. You see….” Before Blake could finish his sentence, he was cut off by Mr. Wilson. “Leave of absence denied. We are swamped here and need everyone to do their duty for the company and the customers. What would I say to all those customers waiting for their packages when I let anyone off for the afternoon? That’s our busiest time, getting them delivered before the workday is complete.”“But Sir, if you would let me explain, it’s for the Weston family that I have to leave. You see….”“The Westons? Well, why didn’t you say so in the first place, look? Why don’t you take the rest of the day off.” He was ecstatic since Blake married the Westons, which helped him establish a more secure delivery route, boosting sales. “No, Sir, that won’t be necessary. Just the afternoon would be fine.”“Fine, fine then, you hurry on, and I’ll have Sara send you with half pay for today then. Sar…”“Here you are, Blake’s half wages for the day.” Sara had walked into the room without anyone noticing and handed Blake his wages. Blake left work with his deliveries for the morning. It didn’t take him long, and noon had already arrived before he knew. Having a few hours for himself, he decided to have lunch at his favorite restaurant. It wasn’t a high-class place, but the food was excellent, with a pleasing atmosphere. Finishing his meal, he headed towards the train station. Henry staggered into his office, fell into his chair, and put his head down on his desk. There was a knock at the door, and the person behind the door was greeted with hostility. “Yea, yea, what do you want?” The door opens and in walks his father, Quinton, looking at his son at his desk with disdain. “Morning, Son. It looks like you had a rough night, and playing around will not do you any good.”“Dad, what do you want this early? It was to get that internet star to switch to our entertainment company.”“Well, did you get her to sign onto our label?”“No, not yet. She’s pretty hard to convince. She wants a contract worth five million a year, and she claims Global already has her for four million with a free agent. I don’t know how to go forward with this one.”“Well, are you sure she will bring the revenue into the company?”“She’s hot right now in the video circuit. A lot of men out there idolize her, and marketing should be easy.”“Agree, but don’t make it seem like we’re desperate to sign her to the platform. Just let her sweat it out a little. Have you been up to Claire’s office lately and checked on their progress on the proposal?”“Dad, I just arrived, I have a splitting headache, and my head is not in the game as of right now,” Henry answered back, laying his head down upon the desk.
Chapter 11 Chapter 11
“Well, you better get into the game and watch for Claire. We both know she’s better than you, but she’s still just a woman. The old man surely will not give the CEO position to a woman, so you better perk up and see what you can do.” Quinton exclaimed back as he slapped the desk, startling Henry back up. “Dad, I don’t understand. How can we allow her to lead a team to Elon Trust’s investment? She already tarnishes the family by marrying that trash delivery guy.” Henry asked, still holding onto his aching head. “Well, weren’t you the one who insisted that she and her department take up the challenge?”“It wanted to humiliate her. How can anyone get to see Mr. Wheaton, much less invest with Elon Trust? Now, she will make the company look bad and make the family a laughing stock.”“Well, it’s too late now. Everyone knows we are seeking an investment with Elon Trust, and she’s now our only hope.” Quinton said as he turned towards the door, leaving Henry to ponder his mistake. Quinton then left the office but not without purposely slamming the door. “Asshole,” Henry uttered under his breath and put his head back on the desk. Claire was getting feedback from her team to start working on their proposal. She gave herself and her team till the end of next week to have the final draft for their presentation. After everyone left, she continued with previous projects that took a back seat the last two days so her crew could focus on the Elon proposal. Just then, a knock on the door was heard. “Come.”“Miss. Dalton, a gentleman is here to see you.” A slender woman walked in with long brown hair and glasses hiding her brown eyes, smooth skin, and light completion, making her a sexy secretary. This was Claire’s assistant and friend Gloria Frost. “Send him in.”“Right away, mam.” A middle-aged man with striking features and a tailored suit walked into the office. “Miss. Dalton, let me introduce myself. I’m John Addams, and I work for Mr. Anderson. I’m to inform you that a plane ticket and reservations have been booked for this weekend to send you to Missouri to be with Mr. Anderson.” Claire was shocked at this invitation. She wanted nothing more than to leave right this minute and start packing, but her proposal was still in its infancy, and the family dinner with her grandfather was tomorrow. How could she leave just like that with no notice? Grandfather would not allow it. She had to go to a family gathering, and her sister is arriving this afternoon. There was no way that she could do this. She had no time to plan, so there was no way with this short time scale that she could leave. “Mr. Addams…”“John, please.” He interrupted her. “John, please understand I would love to follow you right now, but I can’t leave at such short notice. I have prior engagements that can’t be changed at this moment.”“I understand. I am informing you of Mr. Anderson’s request, and I shall inform him of your decline and explain in detail your sorrow. I shall be leaving first.” Claire was in turmoil. She wanted to go and see Steve, but it was so much short notice for her, and she was touched that he would have taken the initiative to get her a plane ticket and reservations book for her just because he missed her. Just as Claire was feeling these mixed emotions, Mr. Addams was on the phone with Steve as soon as he left the building. “It’s just as you had predicted, young Master. She couldn’t leave on such short notice, so she declined the offer.”“Good, she will think I’m missing her terribly and want her to come to me. She is such a gullible character. Okay, now keep an eye on her for me. She is the key into Weston’s estate, bye.” Steve was in his office finishing up his call when a knock at the door was heard. “Yes.” The woman who was with him last night, giving the air of a sophisticated woman, walks in wearing a vee-shaped neckline red dress that made her look like a fairy walking towards him. She is Saline Emerson, daughter of Harry Emerson, owner of Emerson Realty. He smiles intensely at her and stands up, greeting her with a passionate kiss. “Father has agreed to the merger. He will be arriving soon to close the deal. As long as you stick to the deal, all will be done.”“Saline, that’s great news. I have been working with you to get this deal for months back in Swanville. The merger contract has already been printed, and all he has to do is sign the contract, and our family will be one when we get married. Besides, we already consummated our love last night. How about we continue over on the sofa?”“Steve, control yourself. After the signing, we will celebrate our two families joining tonight. I invited a friend that I want you to meet, and she’s been wanting to see my fiancé.” The train arrived close to the time Julie had given to Blake. Standing there was a beautiful woman with long blond hair. She was fair-complected and wore glasses hiding her sharp blue eyes. With a young body, one would have mistaken her for a starlet. If she had removed her glasses, she would have been a younger version of Blake’s wife, Claire. This was Tabitha Dalton, seeing his Sister-in-law Blake walk towards her. “Tabitha Dalton?” Blake asked her to be confident he had the right person. “Yes, and who would you be?”“I’m Blake Elon. Seeing this is our first meeting, I’m your brother-in-law.” Blake extended his hand in greetings, but what came next was very unexpected. The young woman jumped into his arms and hugged him tightly. “Brother-in-law, so it is you, how I’ve waited for this moment. You don’t know how much I wanted to have a brother, but I guess this will have to do.” Blake was taken aback by how affectionate this woman was from his wife and mother-in-law. He wasn’t prepared at all. “Brother-in-law, is there something the matter?” Tabitha looked into her brother-in-law’s eyes, still holding onto him. “Cough, cough, Tabitha, don’t you feel embarrassed with me?”“Embarrass, why? Oh, because I’m hugging you? I’m sorry, I was just so excited to meet you finally. I didn’t believe a word my mom said about you, and seeing you now, I know she’s wrong about you… so is my sister.” Tabitha said as she removed herself from him and stepped back, looking him over from head to toe. “Yea, they’re definitely wrong about you. You give off an air of superiority and confidence that not too many can pull off. Were you in the military?” Blake almost stumbled when he heard her carrying her luggage out of the station to his car. “What makes you say that?”“I had a friend who was in the military. He gave the same aura you are giving, a shame he passed away in the war. I cried for a week. They say he was a war hero, saved many men in his platoon.”“He sounds like he was a great man. Many veterans had died for our freedom and were not honored.”“Brother-in-law, would it be okay if I just called you brother and you call me sister? I’ve always wanted a brother, but it was impossible when mom and dad divorced, especially with mom’s attitude. I swear she would sell her children for money, you know?”“Please, sister, I would be honored if you called me brother. Get in. I will take us home.”“Sure, brother.” Replied Tabitha, who thought that this was a dream come true. She had a brother now to protect and comfort her.
Chapter 12 Chapter 12
Tabitha got into his car with all smiles looking upon her new brother. The drive was not long, and their conversation surmised her life at the college and how she lived in the dorm without any breaks during the pandemic, almost like they were in prison. No one could leave or enter the campus; it was in total lockdown. When they arrived, Tabitha quickly got out of the car, ran to the door, and let herself in while Blake lagged, carrying her bags. Entering the home, Blake saw Tabitha hugging her mother and kissing her face like a child would do when they hadn’t been home for a while. “Girl, will you calm yourself down. You’re behaving like a little girl. Who would guess that you are twenty this year.”“Oh, mom, I just missed you so much. That school kept us cooped up for practically all year, and I couldn’t come to visit you or my sister. I even missed my brother and sister’s wedding. How unfair is that.”“What are you gapping about? What brother are you talking about? This piece of trash isn’t your brother. When your sister gets her divorce from him in a year, I will introduce you to your real brother-in-law.”“What you are spouting about, mom, Blake is not trash. He’s a veteran and served in the military, so how could he be trash like you say.” Tabitha became adamant in front of her mother, putting her arms crossed her chest. “Now you look here, young lady, I don’t know what lies he’s told you, but he hasn’t served in no military. He’s not a veteran. He’s only a delivery guy, working for a salary of about a thousand a week.”“It’s not a lie. I know, he….” Blake took the time to interrupt their argument to change the subject. “Mom, where will I be putting Tabitha’s luggage?”“Why, in Claire’s room, they will be sleeping together until we find a better solution, and don’t think you will be sleeping in there with them, you, you, pervert.” Taken aback by what his mother-in-law had called him, he shook his head and brought her bags into his and Claire’s room. Laying the bags down, his phone began to ring with an unknown number. Picking it up, he answered it outright. “Hello? Who’s calling?”“Mr. Elon? Blake Elon?”“Yes, Who’s this? How did you get my number?”“Sir! I’m calling on behalf of the joint chiefs of the pentagon. To inform you that the Mid Easter Alliance has been eradicated. All information leaked onto the dark web has been terminated, and all threats have been nullified.”“What? Have all been eradicated? Nullified?”“Yes, Sir, you are no longer in danger, and we would like for you to rejoin the Core to resume your position as Chief General War God.”“I’m sorry, but I will have to refuse. I’m no longer the Chief General War God, and I have a wife now and many responsibilities.” Blake sat down on the bed and explained. “Sir, if you would please reconsider, your training is invaluable to the military. Your men were the top of the elite soldiers, and no one could come close to your training skills and technique.”“Let me think about it. I’ve been away for a long time, and being the Chief General would take a lot of my time. Maybe we could go over a replacement for the time being.”“Sir, when could you arrange for a meeting?”“How about sometime next week, just you never gave me your name.”“Sorry, I was too excited about finally talking to the legend of war. I’m General Beker, leader of the Flying Brigade.”“Okay, General, I can reach you at this number, correct?”“Yes, Chief General, I will be awaiting your call.”“Okay, I’ll give you a call later next week. Bye.” Blake hung up his phone and lay on the bed with his hands over his face. It was too much to think about. The burden that had plagued him this entire time had been eliminated. He could go home and see his grandfather. He missed him dearly, and it’s been years since he had seen him. Blake then decided it was time to see his family tomorrow, but unknown to him, his conversation was not private. “I knew you were a veteran, and from the sound of it, not an ordinary soldier either. Chief General War God, I never heard of that rank in the military. What branch did you serve?” Tabitha had been standing in the doorway with her hands on her hips, listening to Blake’s conversation with aw and respect. “So, you heard. You know it isn’t polite to listen in on a private conversation. I’ll have to kill you and your entire family to keep this top secret.” Blake replied, ignoring her question. Tabitha became wide-eyed with fear looking at her brother-in-law. “Don’t look at me like that. I was only joking. Like I would do something like that. Remember, I fought for your freedom.” She loosened her fear and looked at him with an angry face this time. She was scared that he would have done that to her and her family. “Look, I’m sorry, it was a feeble joke. If you would like, I can make it up to you. What do you say?”“Okay, well, let me tag along on your meeting? I find the military life fascinating.”“I don’t know. The General may not like that. We may indeed discuss very secretive materials.”“If it comes to that… I will leave the room. No problem.” Tabitha became very adamant about going to his meeting, so, in the end, he agreed to let her come. They both walked out of the room, and, looking at the time, Blake went straight into the kitchen and started preparing dinner. Tabitha wanted to help with the dishes, but Blake was strict with her, so she went to her mother and gave her company in the living room. When the meals were almost done, his wife came home, took off her shoes, and flopped onto the couch like she always did with her head back, eyes closed. Blake rushed to her side and handed her red wine. Without a word, he returned to the kitchen. “He must love you to be there for you with a glass of wine at the end of the day.” Tabitha was sitting next to her sister. Claire hadn’t noticed her and was startled when she heard her sister’s voice. “Tabby, when did you arrive?” Claire put her drink down and hugged her sister. “I’ve been here. You must be really into your world not to have noticed me sitting here.”“Don’t be ridiculous, and to answer your question, no, there is no love between us. He does it, so he doesn’t get scolded by me.”“I don’t know. It looked like brother enjoyed handing it to you,” Tabitha said, feeling a little jealous of her sister.
Chapter 13 Chapter 13
“What do you know? You’re just a kid. When will you grow up? This marriage is a farce. There is no love whatsoever, and there will never be.” Claire had flared up and explained. Listening to her sister’s explanation, it sounded like she never gave him a chance and was too stubborn to see his good qualities. Tabitha felt sorry for Blake for enduring the hardship her mother and sister had put him through. “Well, if you don’t want him, I guess I will have to take him. I see a lot of potential in Blake, and I believe he will prove both of you wrong and do great things in the future.” Both mother and sister looked at each other and laughed, not only for what she had said but also for being a naive child. “Oh, Tabby, what nonsense. I don’t believe that man can ever amount to anything other than being a deliveryman and work the rest of his life doing just that, once trash always trash,” Claire stated. “I agree. He will always be trash.” Stated her mother to Tabitha. Just then, the door to the kitchen had been opened, and Blake came out with their meals on a tray. “Please, dinner is served. Come and get it while it’s hot.” They all joined at the table and started eating. Tabitha took one mouth full and was overwhelmed by the dish’s flavors that Blake had cooked. For her, it was better than a five-star restaurant. “Wow, brother, your cooking is amazing. I never had meals this flavorful. Why aren’t you a chef?” Both sisters and mother looked in his direction and waited for his response. His wife and mother-in-law felt in their heart that they, too, have never eaten meals as exquisite as his, but they would never admit it to him or anyone else. “A chef, you praise me too much. I know a few culinary dishes, and I would never be able to compete with an actual chef.”“If I could come home to meals like this every day, I wouldn’t bother going out to eat. I would stay home and enjoy. Sister, you are fortunate to have him.” Tabitha had spoken without slowing down while eating. “Who’s lucky, humph? Just a dog who knows a few tricks is all.” Blake ignored his wife’s insult, for he had gotten used to it and remembered back when he was in the Elon family when he was young, he would sneak into the kitchen and watch the head chef prepare the meals. One day he was caught by him, and after begging for a week, the head chef allowed him to learn all of the chef’s secrets on preparing foods. By the time Blake left the family, he had surpassed his master chef. Thinking of this, he realized it was time to go back and greet his grandfather and visit his parent’s graves. So, he decided to let them know he would leave for the weekend. “Mom, Claire, I won’t be home this weekend, and I will be leaving after dinner is finished and taking care of the chores.”“What? Where are you going? Who will take care of the house while you are gone? Julie asked her questions looking at Blake and then at Claire. “I haven’t seen my grandfather for a while, and it’s been years since I visited my parents’ grave. I will be going into the country.” Blake had explained to them. The Elon corporations originated in the Capital, but the family home and burial plot resided in the countryside. His grandfather wanted peace and tranquility from everyday business and moved his estate to the country. “Humph, how do we know this is the truth? For all we know, you’ll meet up with some whore you have on the side. Just remember, if you bring shame to my daughter, you can forget the money and divorce my daughter and get out of my house.” Blake didn’t respond to her, not caring if they believed him or not. All he wanted to do was let them know he would not be home for the remainder of the time. “Humph, whatever, do what you like. Mother and I can take care of the house while you’re gone, and it’s not like we’re incapable of doing what you can.”“Sister, you will not accompany him to visit his grandfather or the grave of your mother and father-in-law?”“Why should I? This marriage is a farse, I’m not obligated whatsoever, and I’m also part of the company heads. I have to meet with grandfather this weekend also.” ‘If I couldn’t leave to see Steve, why should I go with Blake and visit his family.’ Tabitha stayed quiet for a time and then asked Blake. “Brother, can I come with you?” Tabitha saw that her sister was not going with her brother-in-law to represent herself to his family and thought it would shame them as he was married into their family, especially to his deceased parents. Both sister and mother were shocked by Tabitha’s request. They would never guess that Tabitha would have wanted to travel with her brother-in-law. “I don’t think it would be wise. I will be traveling to get there later, and you just got back. Don’t you want to stay with your sister and mother?” Blake didn’t think it would be appropriate to bring his sister-in-law to meet his family. “I also forbid it. Young lady, I don’t know what they taught you at that school, but you have rebelled since you got back. Besides, we three need to see your grandfather tomorrow, and you haven’t yet greeted him.”“Forbid? Rebel? Mom, this is the twentieth-first century. When is having an opinion and an open mind considered rebelling? Grandfather doesn’t know I’m back, so I’ll see him after the weekend. I’m already packed, and someone from this family has to represent us. What would happen if no one showed up on our behalf? How would that look upon this family? I’m just thinking of your face, being that the both of you have to meet with grandfather and neither of you can go with him.”“So, what, his family is just country folk, what difference does it make? This country bumkin doesn’t have the prestige as our family, and what if he’s not telling the truth? He may take advantage of you. No, I will not allow it.”“Mom, brother is not like that, he’s a veteran, and I believe in him. They have a code of honor and morals that can’t be broken.”“Veteran, and who pray tell told you that? Him? I won’t believe it. He’s lying to you to get close and deceive you.”“Are you a veteran? Why don’t I know of it?” Claire asked, looking at the man across the table from her. She had always admired a military man, even dreamed of marrying one with all the ceremony of the sword formation they would walk under that was bestowed upon them.
