TAWOG: Instinct

The morning sun, usually a cheerful harbinger of a new day in Elmore, felt heavy on Gumball Watterson's fur. Sweat plastered his blue coat as he and Darwin strained, pulling a rope attached to a pulley system. Above them, a massive, rolled-up banner slowly ascended over the front of Elmore Junior High.
“You…sure this isn't…overdoing it…just a tad…?” Darwin panted, sweat soaking his socks.
“Of… course…buddy,” Gumball replied, his own breath hitched. “This ain't… anywhere near as…extravagant…as the last time…”
He envisioned Penny’s face, beaming with joy at his grand romantic gesture. It had been the best weekend with her, and he wanted to show his appreciation. He missed her already.
“Aaaand…there,” Gumball announced as the banner settled into place. He wiped his brow, a triumphant smile spreading across his face. “That wasn't too difficult.”
High in a nearby tree, unseen, a cycloptic figure watched, a sinister grin spreading across his face. Rob drummed his fingers together eagerly. It was time for his revenge.
