After Humanity

The misty veil clung to the distant mountains, barely revealing their forms through the morning haze that settled over Rachel’s cherished lake. With a joyful sigh, she slipped off her shoes, easing her feet into the cool water. The initial shock quickly faded, replaced by a refreshing chill that promised the coming warmth of summer.
She lay back in the grass, watching sunlight dapple through the clouds, savoring the warmth on her skin. The lake was her sanctuary, the only place in Demin where she could truly be alone, a quiet haven even Mama didn't fuss about.
"Rachel!" Her mother's call cut through the tranquility, sharp with an unfamiliar desperation. Rachel sat up, her heart clenching. Mama stood on the hill, arms wrapped tightly around herself, a clear sign of fear. "Rachel, I need you back at the house this instant!"
Rachel scrambled up, shoes in hand, running barefoot towards her mother. Mama enveloped her in a painfully tight embrace, her face pale. "It's probably nothing," she whispered, but her trembling voice betrayed her. "Mrs. Carp heard a rumor... a sentry went missing. And your father isn't back yet."
