The world outside blurred into a comforting green as the car sped along, leaving behind everything Reena had ever known. Her father, a constant presence of gentle concern beside her, hummed an old tune.
"Excited to move to the new town?" he asked, his voice a soft rumble that barely cut through the hum of the tires.
Reena clicked her seatbelt into place, the sound sharp in the quiet. "Yeah, I guess," she replied, trying to force a smile. "I mean, I haven't moved before, so it'll be a new adventure."
He saw right through her, as always. His hand tightened on the steering wheel, a familiar gesture of unspoken guilt. "I know I'm uprooting your life, you have friends here, but after I lost your mother—I can't stand to be in that house anymore."
Reena reached over, touching his elbow softly. "It's okay, Dad. You don't have to explain. I'm with you one hundred percent."
He sighed, a heavy sound. "I know, I know, but you've always loved it here, Reena, and I feel guilty for pulling you away from this town."
She turned to look out the window, watching her hometown fade into the distance. "Yeah, I did love it here, but I'm never fully going to grow up if I don't experience the world," she said, watching the trees begin to blur. The road stretched ahead, a long, uncertain ribbon into a new, unknown life.
