Unexpected Goal

The air crackled with anticipation as Auggie, muscles screaming, pushed through the final meters of the sprint. Coach's voice cut through the exhaustion, a promise of the season's first game hanging in the air. Cheers erupted from the team, a wave of collective energy.
After the huddle, Auggie scanned the stands, his eyes searching for a familiar figure. Helen Jackson, his favorite photographer, sat absorbed in her work, headphones on, a world away. He knew she'd be there for a while, so he slipped away to the locker room.
Returning, he found her still hunched over her laptop, oblivious. He walked up the ramp, waiting, then finally, a light tap on her screen. She jumped, startled. "Holy shit! Auggie, what are you doing here?" He grinned, knowing this was just the beginning.
