I hated riding the subway. Not just any subway either. The subways in New York City to be exact. There were no ifs, ands, or buts about it. I completely hated everything about them. It was that simple.

Who wanted to ride on an underground train that smelled of stale play dough and old people? Maybe it was just me or maybe I was over exaggerating, or maybe I was losing my sense of smell, but that's definitely the smell that came to mind when I stepped foot in a subway car.

My alarm clock, number three mind you, blared its irritating siren, jolting me from a half-sleep. Groaning, I slammed my hand down to hit snooze, then rolled out of bed, blankets and all, landing on the hardwood floor with a loud thud. My mom's voice echoed from downstairs, "Gemma, what was that?! You better not have broken anything up there!"

"I'm fine! Thanks for asking!" I yelled back, untangling myself. After a quick shower and my usual morning routine, I grabbed my backpack and bounded down the stairs, the smell of bacon assaulting my nose. My dad sat at the kitchen table, engrossed in his newspaper, while my mom leaned over the frying pan.

I snatched two pieces of bacon from my dad's plate, ignoring his raised eyebrows, and made my way to the front door. "Just eat the bacon, anything else and you'll end up in the hospital!" I called out, before slipping outside, leaving my dad's laughter echoing behind me. Munching on the stolen bacon, I walked towards the subway station, blissfully unaware of what awaited me.
