The World Which Is
Dennis is on the cusp of adulthood, eagerly anticipating his 'Choice Day' and the freedom it promises. But in a world where a powerful System dictates classes and destinies, his overprotective father and the looming threat of monster waves conspire to keep him confined. When a sudden monster attack breaches the town's defenses, Dennis seizes his chance for adventure, only to find himself entangled with a mysterious, alluring figure who offers a taste of the wild world beyond the walls. Will he defy his father's will and embrace the unknown, or will his destiny be sealed within the safe, stifling confines of Court?

The thud of wooden swords echoed across the training field, a familiar rhythm to the hot summer air. "Attack," Grandmother's voice cut through, sharp and clear. I parried Josie's wild swing, the wood clattering, then feinted, making her leap back. Her grin, bright and unburdened, made something in me stir, a thought that was quickly dismissed. We were almost adults, almost choosing our paths. Mine felt pre-determined, a cage built by a father who loved me too much to let me live.

"Stop gawking, Dennis," Grandmother snapped, and the illusion of freedom shattered. My attention snapped back to Josie, whose next thrust caught me hard in the stomach. The world spun for a moment, the dull ache a reminder of reality.
