The Bro Code

The scent of pepperoni and melting cheese hung heavy in the air of Pizza City, a familiar comfort on any given Thursday afternoon. For Nicholas James Maguire, it was less about the food and more about the potential for chaos.
“Hey, Maguire!” Robert Maxin’s voice cut through the din, pulling Nick from his comfortable slouch in a back-corner booth. “I wanna hear that story again!”
Nick smirked, adjusting his Red Sox cap. He knew why Robert wanted the story – it made him look good, especially with Hannah Green perched nearby. “Promise not to pee your pants this time?” he shot back, a grin playing on his lips. Beside him, Austin Banks, his best friend, offered a fist bump. Carter O’Connor, their third musketeer, was engrossed in his phone, as usual.
“How long do you think it’ll be before Hannah comes over here?” Austin mused, eyes on Robert.
Nick shrugged. “Five minutes. Give or take. Maybe shorter if he tells her about the time he went to Build-A-Bear with us.” He saw Carter finally look up from his phone. “So who’re you texting, then?” Austin pressed, elbowing Carter. “Who’s the girl?”
Carter sighed. “My sister. My mom doesn’t want to cook dinner so she’s sending Eliza to eat with us. I hope that’s okay, dude.” He looked at Austin, who visibly tensed. The ‘Bro Code’ had a strict rule about dating friends’ sisters, and Eliza had a complicated history with Austin. Just then, the restaurant door opened, and Nick’s world tilted.
