Despicable Arrogance

The fluorescent lights of the town library hummed, a familiar, comforting drone that usually soothed Audrey. Today, however, it merely highlighted the chaotic symphony of elementary schoolers. Terry, a pint-sized menace in the fourth grade, was currently engaged in a paper ball war, his mischievous grin flashing over Audrey’s shoulder as he crumpled another piece of scrap paper.
“Terry, please put down the paper,” Audrey sighed, pressing her fingers lightly to her temples. Her patience, already thin after an afternoon of multiplication woes, was wearing dangerously low.
Before she could intervene, a crumpled ball of white, lined paper bounced off her face. The snickers of the middle school girls studying nearby echoed in the usually quiet space. Audrey gritted her teeth. She needed a break, and more importantly, she desperately needed some help at this place.
