Sever - A Wattpad Featured Story

The air in the cell was thick with the scent of stale sweat and despair. I traced the words 'Yor fuct' etched into the wall, a grim prophecy of my own fate. Outside, the rhythmic tap-tap-tap of boots on concrete grew louder, then faltered, replaced by the shuffling cadence of approaching footsteps.
A sharp chime echoed as the cell door clanged open, revealing silhouettes against the blinding fluorescent light. Uniforms. Big, blacked-out bellies and cone-shaped hats that swallowed the light. My body wavered, tired and dizzy from pacing the minutes away.
Amidst a haze of espresso, we left the cell. The handcuffs chafed, but I clenched my fists, fighting to keep my expression blank as we emerged into the stark, blinding sunlight atop steep marble steps. Below, a line of police cars awaited, glinting on the kerb.
My borrowed suit felt wrong—musty, too wide, too short. It was a cruel mockery of the pristine, starched grey suit my father would have worn. Why that mattered now, I couldn't say. Just like how Pico's funds for Jade's birthday never arrived until after the show finished. Everything always came too late.
On the pavement, I paused, feigning to fasten a drooping blazer button. Jade's serene image flickered in my mind, a fleeting glimpse of her fine lips and the way she wound her wavy golden hair around her fingers. Before I could hold onto it, a hand pressed into my shoulder blade.
I crouched without flinching. They'd put one officer behind me, while Detective Pike circled to the other side, briefly breaking her line of sight. These were the moments I waited for, like cracks in the pavement, a brief respite from the hard, cold reality of where I was.
