Regret (Book 2, the Redemption Series)

The humid Chicago air hung heavy, a familiar cloak for Jake as his old truck rumbled towards the city limits. The radio, blasting an 80s power ballad, almost drowned out the persistent ring of his phone. It was Sam, his daughter, her second attempt to reach him. He fumbled, cursing as the phone tumbled to the floor. A blaring horn from a semi-trailer jolted him back to reality as he swerved, narrowly avoiding a collision.
He managed to snag the phone, his heart still thumping against his ribs. “Hi, Sam,” he said, his voice a little rough.
“Hey, Dad. Where are you?” Her voice, even over the phone, carried a hint of apprehension.
“I’m about to cross the border into Indiana.”
“So you’re still in Michigan?”
“Yes.”
“I thought you were supposed to be home a week ago?”
“Yeah. It took a little longer than I planned to get things squared away,” Jake replied, a tight knot forming in his stomach. He hoped she'd never learn what had truly delayed him.
He had assassinated a man.
