The scent of expensive coffee and the low hum of conversation filled the lavish Dawood Baig family dining room. Mrs. Dawood, ever the picture of poised elegance, watched her daughter, Rumeysa, with a mix of concern and rising frustration. "Rumeysa, come home early today. You know Gabriel is coming, and we're invited for dinner at your uncle's house to celebrate his arrival and discuss important party matters," she said, her voice a little too bright.
Rumeysa, however, remained absorbed in her breakfast, a silent fortress against her mother's urgency. "Are you even listening to me, Rumeysa? I'm talking to you!" her mom exclaimed, a hand settling on her hip, brows furrowed.
"I'm listening, Mom," Rumeysa replied, her tone flat, her eyes not once leaving her plate. It was a practiced detachment. She rattled off her schedule, a wall of excuses. "I have a hectic schedule today. A court hearing at 11 am, a meeting with a persecuted family, a visit to the orphanage, a meeting at 6 pm, and an office dinner at 9 pm. I won't be able to make it. I'll let Uncle know."
Mrs. Dawood sighed, disappointment clouding her features. She knew her daughter's stubbornness all too well. Asher and Mr. Dawood ate in silence, almost invisible. Rumeysa stood abruptly, grabbing her bag, her long dark hair swinging behind her like a defiant curtain. "Let's go, Asher," she ordered, her voice firm, a flicker of softness in her eyes for her younger brother. He protested, but she was already waiting outside, leaving her mother to turn on her father, accusations echoing in the hallway.
