The cold spray of the hose hit me square in the face, sending icy rivulets down my neck. "Jake, stop it!" I shrieked, dissolving into a fit of giggles. His giant arm, thick and warm, was wrapped around my stomach, holding me captive. He laughed, a deep rumble against my back, as he continued his watery assault.
This was one of the few moments I'd had Jacob all to myself since Bella Swan and her 'stark white' boyfriend had broken up. Bella, the queen of unintentional chaos, was using Jake as her rebound, a fact he, of course, hadn't noticed. Every time I dared suggest she was just using him to get over Edward, Jake would leap to her defense, storming off and ignoring me for days.
Today, though, was different. Today, it was just us, bathed in the fleeting afternoon sun, the world momentarily simplified to the sound of our laughter and the relentless spray of the hose. It was perfect. Until it wasn't.
