Vampire's Pet

The lingering sting on my back was a constant reminder of last night’s whipping. My own dried tears still clung to my face, and the Pet Master had tightened my collar to the point where every breath was a struggle. I didn’t know what I had done to deserve it, but the memory of the pain made me flinch as the shop lights flickered on.
Opening time.
I sat silently in my cage, watching the other girls whimper and scoot back as the Pet Master’s heavy footsteps approached. Today, I tried to make myself smaller, letting my unbrushed red hair fall in front of my eyes as I stared at the bottom of the cage, not daring to meet the gaze of the vampires who came and went.
Then, the bell above the door jingled, signaling a new arrival. For some reason, I looked up. He was tall, running a hand through his medium-length black hair. His eyes, a deep emerald green, scanned the shop, and for a brief, terrifying moment, they met mine.
