The Agents

The Agents
Jaycee Carter, a sharp-tongued, no-nonsense agent, finds her tightly controlled world shaken when a ghost from her past, Jaxon Steele, unexpectedly reappears. Once partners in a life far more dangerous and thrilling than her current mundane assignments, Jaxon's return forces Jaycee to confront buried memories, old wounds, and the true purpose of their 'agency.' As their intertwined history unravels, Jaycee is pulled back into a high-stakes game where loyalty is tested, secrets are deadly, and the line between past and present blurs. Will she embrace the chaos or cling to the fragile peace she's built?

The rhythmic hum of the agency's hidden entrance was a familiar drone, a dull counterpoint to Jennifer's persistent chatter. I pushed the concealed button on the pillar, and the discreet panel slid open with a soft hiss, revealing the scanner. As I pressed my palm against its cool surface, I could feel the weariness that clung to me like a second skin.

"I have a ton of work that needs to get done," I mumbled, my gaze fixed on the glowing light of the scanner.

Aaron, ever the joker, rolled his hazel eyes. "Of course you do, Carter." His voice was laced with an amusement I couldn't share. I just gave him a droll stare, waving him into the newly revealed passageway. He chuckled, stepping past me, and Jennifer, stifling a laugh, followed close behind with Stacey at her heels. The panel sealed shut with a soft thud as I entered, leaving the mundane world behind.

"Come on, Carter!" Jennifer exclaimed, her voice echoing slightly in the sterile corridor. "You are a twenty-two-year-old dark-haired beauty! You should be going out with your friends and having a good time, not working every single night!"

I snorted, moving towards the next panel for the retinal scan. "As much fun as that sounds, I have to work." The door slid open, revealing the cavernous main room of the agency. Another day, another trivial case.
