The biting October wind sliced through Angela's thin hoodie, a cruel reminder of her new reality. Twenty-three years, and she was still running. She shivered, pulling the threadbare fabric tighter around her. Her uniform, a too-short diner dress, offered no comfort against the cold, or against the persistent dread that gnawed at her.
She tried to push away thoughts of Miami, New York, her family, and the 'him' who had chased her across states. Tried to ignore the constant, paralyzing fear that he would find her, even here, in this quiet Canadian town. She pulled herself together, the familiar scent of stale coffee and old vinyl hitting her as she stepped into the diner. The bell above the door chimed, a mocking welcome.
"Hey girl," Kristen, her bubbly co-worker, called out. Angela managed a weak smile, stripping off her hoodie before Luigi, their creepy boss, could complain. The day began as usual, a blur of lukewarm coffee and forced smiles, until the bell chimed again, and three men in suits walked in, changing everything.
