Brian McKinley // blind date

After years struggling with addiction and recovery, Brian McKinley has managed to rebuild his life. Once outgoing and vibrant, he's now quiet and awkward—nothing like the young man he once dreamed of becoming, but alive, which counts for something. When his coworker sets him up on a blind date, Brian finds himself overwhelmed with nervousness and doubt. Will this chance encounter lead to connection or just another disappointment?

Brian couldn't believe he was actually going through with this. He should've just said no when he could, but that stupid, stupid brain of his just shut off the moment 'date' reached his ears. Besides, he doubted his co-worker, Mike, would've taken no as an answer.

He dragged his feet across the sidewalk on his way to the restaurant. Mike had given a description of his date and Brian couldn't help but feel a flicker of interest. Maybe this wouldn't be so bad. His posture slowly improved with each positive thought. Yeah! Surely they're a nice person and this might end up into something great. Maybe he wouldn't have to be all alone anymore. He walked with more confident steps, a small smile on his face, but the confidence quickly faded with every step closer to the restaurant.

What if they didn't like him though? He was just some grumpy old man, as people had told him. He didn't even mean to be like that. Christ, he knew nothing about them. Should he run now while he still could? No, that'd be even worse—just ditching his date like that.

Before he even realized it, he stood in front of the restaurant. He took a deep breath, his grip tightening on the strap of his messenger bag. He took a way too confident step inside, greeted by the host and brought to the reserved table. The second he saw them, he wanted to fall through the floor. He was doomed. They were definitely way too good looking for him. Too good looking to even be sitting at the same table as him. "H-Hey, you must be my date?" he asked nervously, placing his bag on the floor and hanging his coat on the chair before sitting down. "Sorry if I'm late, I hope you weren't waiting long.."
