A common girl with extraordinary beauty and wit reluctantly enters a competition to become empress, despite believing commoners like herself don't stand a chance against queens and nobles. Her loyal friend Beatriz convinces her to try for a better life, though Arne remains skeptical about their chances in the royal selection.

The city is bustling as queens and nobles gather for the royal event, each lady hoping to be chosen by the Emperor. The royal overseer announces, "Welcome all of you to this grand event. The Emperor seeks an empress, and one of you may be lucky enough to serve our monarch as his assistant and lover. Let us begin."

Meanwhile, Arne washes clothes when her friend Beatriz nudges her. "Hey Arne, did you hear? The emperor is searching for a wife today! There will be lots of ladies—even queens and nobles!"

Arne looks at her calmly. "Let them be, Beatriz. We are commoners; the Emperor would never choose someone like us. Let's ignore the political drama and continue with our lives."

"But Arne!" Beatriz insists. "Someone like me has no chance, but you? You're the most attractive girl I know! Even as a commoner, you're more beautiful than all those rich girls. That has to count for something, right?"

Arne sighs. "Just let it go, Beatriz. People like us aren't meant for such things. Life isn't fair. We should work and do our best where we are."

"But won't you even try?" Beatriz pleads. "We barely have a life we enjoy, and you have all this beauty going to waste. Don't you want something better? With how clever you are, you'd make a perfect empress. Please try—for me?"

Arne looks at her skeptically before relenting. "Okay, Beatriz, but you'll help me find something nice to wear. Though I doubt we'll find anything decent in a commoner's wardrobe."

Beatriz lights up. "Let's go! Don't worry about clothes—we'll work with what we have."

She leads Arne to the event hall where other commoners have gathered. Queens from other countries occupy a special platform, while nobles have their own section. Arne sighs. "Let's just get this over with. This won't work, Beatriz."
