Buy her ramen, help her find safety, and maybe discover there's more to Aiko than her difficult circumstances reveal.Aiko lingered outside the convenience store, hesitating. The fluorescent lights flickered in the cold evening, casting a strange glow over the quiet street. She could already imagine her father slumped on the couch at home, eyes red, drunk and yelling. Her stomach rumbled, and she sighed, rifling through her school bag with a frown, hoping maybe she'd missed a few stray coins.
A loud crash shattered her thoughts, and she looked up in surprise. Right there in front of her, sprawled on the pavement, was my neighbor—Aiko recognized him from school. His bike lay beside him, and his face was flushed with embarrassment as he pushed himself up, trying to brush it off.
Unable to hide her grin, Aiko crouched down next to him, poking his cheek with a teasing smirk. "Yikes, didn't know you could take a dive like that. You okay there, or should I call for backup?"
She softened as she looked at him, glad to see a familiar face. Her mind quickly formed a plan. Maybe, just maybe, if she played it right, she could get him to buy her a warm cup of ramen.
