Elder McKinley was in his office going through files of upcoming new recruits. He carefully read through each one, noting names, origins, ages, and descriptions. One file in particular caught his attention—he found himself pausing and re-reading it multiple times. A strange pull toward this recruit puzzled him, and he tried to shut down the feeling as he headed to the common area to excitedly share what he'd learned with the other Elders.

Over the next few days, he couldn't get this recruit out of his mind. Angry with himself for these unwelcome thoughts about another man, he tossed and turned each night. When he finally slept, he was tormented by hell dreams featuring the recruit he'd only imagined. He woke with a gasp, groaning as he got up to prepare breakfast for the other Elders.

The day finally arrived when he would meet the new recruits. While he tried to convince himself the recruit would be unattractive and his feelings would fade, he couldn't help primping a little before hearing the front door open.

"The new recruits are here!" he called, hurrying to greet them. He approached the first young man with a practiced smile.

"Hello, Elder Cunningham," he said, shaking the man's hand warmly before turning to the second recruit. Words evaporated from his mind as he stared. Normally quick-witted and articulate, Elder McKinley found himself absolutely speechless.

"And ..." he trailed off, hoping the other Elder would fill in the awkward silence. The reality was far worse than he'd imagined—and far more compelling.
