みのり - Minori Makino - まきの

A late high school setting in modern Japan introduces 18-year-old Minori Makino, a moderately popular student who dislikes the attention he receives from his classmates. When a foreign exchange student from an English-speaking country arrives at their school, Minori tries to remain indifferent. However, from the moment he first sees the anxious new student walk through the classroom doors, his carefully maintained composure begins to unravel. As the only student in class fluent in English, Minori finds himself reluctantly responsible for helping the newcomer navigate their new environment.

Minori knew from the very beginning this would be an issue. 'This' referring to the new student being in his class, for all kinds of different reasons.

Of course, rumors, mostly from the girls spread around like wild fire as soon as word got out that there was going to be a foreigner attending their school. And not just any kind of foreigner, a male foreigner. There was lots of speculation about whether or not he would be attractive. At this point, Minori wasn't so worried about the whole ordeal aside from the chances the foreigner really is attractive. That would make his class much more rowdy.

During the week leading up to the new student's arrival, Minori didn't stress it.

Though, when he saw the new student walk through those heavy classroom doors for the very first time, looking anxious as all can be, that's when it all went down the drain. Looking back, Minori could remember the way his eyes widened in astonishment when he caught a glimpse of the rumpled boy's face. He couldn't be more embarrassed.

The thought alone made him let out a sigh of annoyance as he ran a hand through his hair. He needs to focus on more important things, like the notes he was taking.

But of course, not even his teacher was on his side. When Minori looks up to the teacher ready to get back to his usual routine, his glance was met with tired, fed-up eyes. At first, he thought he was in trouble for not paying attention well enough, which would've been off to say the least, since half the people in the room were either on their phones or giggling to each other while passing notes. Luckily enough, the teacher's words interrupt the scare.

"あ、ミノル君、起きてもらえますか...新しい生徒?彼は私のレッスンが十分に刺激的だと感じていないようです。" It definitely wasn't what Minori expected, nor wanted his teacher to say, but anything was better than getting scolded. Even being forced to actually talk with the new student.

Though, maybe his answer on the other hand wasn't wise of him, but its what he needed to say in support of himself and his own dignity. Never would he admit to knowing a foreigner by name when he's only been attending class for a few days now. Not when he doesn't know half the other students in his class' names, and they've all been here since day 1.

"誰が?"

With a roll of his eyes, the teacher points to the new student, who was very boldly sitting in the front row while passed out, even drooling on his textbook. Minori had to fight the corners of his lips from moving from their constant expression of boredom at the sight.

Without another word Minori obediently got up from his seat, pushing it in as he left it and approaches the new student's desk. He was no stranger to doing the teacher's 'dirty work' as some would call it, and he wasn't going to stop doing it now.

Trying to get this done as quickly and efficiently as possible like always, he grabs the edge of the student's desk and shakes it. He hates how obvious it is that he's trying to be as gentle as he can with the whole process, but ultimately ignores the fact that some people may be able to tell.

With a few more shakes, each getting more and more insistent, Minori finally hears a faint whine come from below. Did this boy strive to make his life more difficult than it already is?

Minori clears his throat subtly as he sees the student's eyes fluttering to life, taking a step back so he doesn't feel like he's intruding on his personal space. Minori wasn't expecting him to be a slow riser, but now that he watched him whine and complain about not wanting to get up like some kind of child, he couldn't help but say something. "Uh uh, don't give me that. You're in class, not your bed. Its time get up."

Minori realizes that he might have shocked the foreigner with his english since he was one of the only english speaking people in their whole school, but he was just glad learning the language finally paid off.
