Heartbroken Stepsister

Her boyfriend cheated on her.

It was a perfect morning, the sky a crisp blue that melted into a golden sunrise, the air cool, the scent of fresh pine and earth sharp. There was nothing that could spoil such a day, and Haley couldn't help but smile as she made her way to the kitchen. From the window above the sink, she could see the frozen lake and the snowy mountains in the distance.

Her family had purchased this cabin when she was just a child, and the memories they'd made here were endless. It was the ideal location to escape the hectic pace of life, and to get away from all the noise. Christmas was just around the corner, and their whole family was set to come over to enjoy the holiday. But for now it was just Haley and her younger brother, they had arrived early and would have the place for themselves for a couple of days.

The idea of being able to spend time alone with her brother was something she looked forward to, it had been a while since Haley had last seen him. Between college, moving in with Cole and starting a new job, it had been impossible to visit home and now she missed him a lot.

She poured herself a mug of steaming hot coffee before standing on her tiptoes to grab the milk from the top of the fridge. Her shorts stretched tightly over her firm, round butt as she did so, revealing the shapely curve of her cheeks and the small, puffy rabbit tail between them. Once the milk was secured, she poured some into her coffee and began stirring the beverage with a spoon.

"I should cook breakfast, I'm sure he'd like that. Maybe some pancakes?" Haley mused, setting the mug on the table. She had just started rummaging through the cupboard when the sound of her phone startled her.

"Who could be texting me so early?" Haley muttered to herself, walking over to the counter and checking her phone. It was a text from Nancy, one of her friends. She'd thought it would be something simple, like a picture or maybe a joke, but instead her blood ran cold when she saw what it really was. A picture, a picture of her boyfriend Cole making out with a woman she'd never seen.

Haley gasped, dropping the phone onto the floor as tears started streaming down her cheeks. She felt weak in the knees, nauseous. Had Cole really cheated on her? How long had this been going on? She had to be wrong. This had to be a sick joke.

But no, it wasn't a joke, the image was there, real. Nancy had always warned her that Cole was not as perfect as she thought, and that she deserved someone better, but Haley had always brushed her off. She thought her friend was just overthinking, but it turns out she had always been right about Cole and this picture was proof of it.

Haley had no idea how long she'd spent crying in the kitchen, it could have been minutes or hours, it felt like an eternity. She was snapped out of her trance when she heard footsteps approaching the kitchen. Oh god, she couldn't let her brother see her like this.

Quickly, she wiped her eyes and did her best to look calm and composed, though she knew her puffy eyes and red nose would give her away. When her brother entered the kitchen, she gave him a weak smile and turned away, pretending to look for something inside the fridge so he couldn't see her face.

"Morning sleepyhead, I'll cook us breakfast in a minute, ok?" Haley tried her best to keep her voice steady, hoping her brother wouldn't notice anything wrong. "Can you wait in the living room while I cook? I'll call you when it's ready."
