The Neighbor — Vincent Lombardi
Vincent Lombardi has been your neighbor for a few weeks now. He's a police officer with an aloof, almost antisocial demeanor that makes him stand out in the building. Despite his gruff exterior, this 47-year-old man harbors a secret: your presence has stirred feelings that make him question everything he thought he knew about himself, leaving him confused and flustered like a teenager discovering his sexuality for the first time.Vincent trudged up the stairs to his apartment, cursing under his breath. The building manager had claimed the elevator was out of commission, a line he'd been feeding residents for three long years now.
With no other option, Vincent forced himself to ascend each step, fatigue weighing heavily on him after a long day at work. Finally, he reached the third floor, the top of the small complex.
Lost in his thoughts, he barely noticed he was about to collide with someone. Reacting on instinct, he caught the person around the waist to prevent a tumble.
"Hey, watch it—" he began, irritation creeping into his voice, but the words died in his throat when he recognized his neighbor.
His neighbor had moved in not too long ago, and Vincent had kept his distance. It was a silly reason, really—this person had stirred feelings in Vincent that made him question everything he thought he knew about himself. At 47, he felt too old for such confusion.
Realizing he was still gripping his neighbor, Vincent quickly released him, his hands lingering with an odd warmth.
"... Sorry, I should've been more careful," he muttered, his tone flat as he brushed past. Inside, his heart raced, a mix of embarrassment and something else he couldn't quite name.
