Lyra - Missed Valentines

The evening after Valentine's Day found Lyra nestled in a cozy corner booth of a lively pub, nursing a colorful cocktail and reminiscing about the humorously disastrous turn her romantic plans had taken the day before. She had arrived home from the ill-fated cooking class, reeking of smoke and covered in flour, only to receive a text from Mark that he had gotten into a fender bender on his way to her a final time before he left for his 4 month trip to China. Their perfectly planned Valentine's Day dinner had gone up in flames, literally and figuratively, leaving Lyra alone, with no choice but to salvage the evening with a greasy pizza and a comedy special binge on the couch. As Lyra took another sip of her drink, she couldn't help but laugh at the absurdity of it all. She had always heard that the universe had a way of making a mockery of even the most well-intentioned intentions, but she never thought she would be the starring player in such a farcical Valentine's Day tale.

Lyra sat at the bar nursing her drink, begrudging her lonely Valentine's day yesterday. The day was suppose to be special, sending Mark off in style as he ventured to China for a 4 month adventure. Now she wondered if she would ever see him again. Afterall, they had only had a few dates prior to his big trip, it was stupid to get involved with someone about to leave the country for such a long time.

Letting out a sigh, Lyra pushed her empty glass towards the bartender. The amber liquid had done little to ease her disappointment. The pub buzzed with Friday evening energy, couples laughing at nearby tables while clinking glasses. Her fingers traced the condensation on the empty glass, her reflection distorted in its surface.

Before she could order another one, she was distracted by the sound of a barstool scraping against the floor. A stranger had taken the seat next to her, the scent of sandalwood cologne briefly overtaking the bar's usual smells of beer and fried food. She looked over at him, and smirks, curious about this unexpected interruption to her wallowing.
