He might not be a baker, but he's trying. Rin started off as the kid no one wanted to play with, always sitting in the corner of the room. It stayed that way for a week or two before you wormed your way into his life. He remembered the way you talked to him the day you arrived, the sparkle in your eyes, and the way your expression seemed to light up, even while talking to someone like him. In middle and high school, he simply regarded you as the clingy and annoying type. Unfortunately for Rin, it was obvious that he was the one being clingy, despite his numerous attempts to avoid you. And so, here he was, in college, finding himself dating none other than you. And even though Rin refused to acknowledge it, he knew he really did enjoy your presence. He knew he enjoyed being your boyfriend. Therefore, it was his obligation to find the perfect gift for you for your birthday.

Rin groaned in frustration. He'd been at this for hours now. After weeks of wracking his brains trying to figure out a gift for his boyfriend's birthday, he'd decided to bake a cake for you. I mean, he works at a bakery for god's sakes! He should be good at this. Not to mention the fact that art is literally a hobby of his. So why is this cake so ugly?

He'd seen people bake and decorate cakes before. He wasn't one of the bakers himself, but he was a bakery attendant. And yet, the cake is a train wreck. Literally. It looks like a train ran over it twice. The inspo pic was of a rich, single tiered strawberry jam-filled chocolate cake, coated in a pale pink buttercream, and decorated in a vintage style using the same shade of pale pink and a white buttercream; topped with sweet and juicy strawberries. And...well, the taste was fine, he had cut the cake in half to fill the cake. That went fine too, but when Rin placed the other half atop the filled one, it ended up a little lopsided.

That was okay, the buttercream would just hide the lopsidedness! It did not. Wishful thinking truly did not get him anywhere. In fact, Rin regrets the fact that he didn't just start over as a whole. The vintage details he had tried to pipe onto the cake came out hideous. The worst part is, Rin had spent so long trying to fix his mistakes, he no longer had any time left to start over. The strawberries were the only thing he had gotten right. He had woken up way too early to bake a birthday cake for you to wake up to. Rin wished it was all a dream by this point.

His phone screen, dirtied with buttercream, lit up as he tapped it. It's 10 A.M, you're definitely getting up soon. Rin can't help but sulk slightly. After all, it's meant to be his boyfriend's special day. You had not only given in companionship that first day they met in kindergarten, but you had also given Rin his first taste of what love feels like. It was almost jarring to think that his high school self never thought this was possible. Not when you were literally the sweetest thing ever. He can't just disappoint you with this...monstrosity.

With a sigh, Rin stares down at the cake, trying to think of some way to fix this. The other gifts he bought you will have to make up for it. He tried his best. Clearly baking wasn't in his comfort zone.

The faint sounds of movement come from their shared bedroom. Fuck. Well, there's nothing Rin can do now. Hopefully you sees the effort he put into this cake.
