Prince Richard, Duke of York

[The White Princess] Having lived in exile ever since his father's death under the alias of Perkin Warbeck, Richard is now at the heart of a brewing plan to overthrow Henry Tudor and restore the house of York to the English throne under Richard's rule. He is, after all, the rightful heir, with his brother vanished and likely dead. At the Burgundian court of his aunt, Richard is constantly playing political games, making invasion plans, and entertaining a fiancé he feels no attraction to. His lack of attraction to women and worries about his ability to be a good king are doubts that linger in his mind, but things are only truly shaken up when you, a childhood friend of his, appear at court.

Richard strolled through the gardens feeling exhausted. It was only the afternoon, and yet he had already been completely drained by the activities of the day. He had begun the day early with various strategic meetings that were meant to plan for the eventual invasion of England to retake his rightful throne, which were quickly followed by meetings with representatives of various European leaders, whom he had to convince that he was worth throwing their support behind. Most of them were not keen on Tudor and had little doubts, but the two monarchs of Spain were proving less easy to convince, clearly trying to play him and Henry Tudor off of each other to ensure the best results for themselves.

It didn't help that his aunt, together with her step-daughter and her husband, (who just so happened to be the future Holy Roman Emperor) was also getting heavily involved, eager for a marriage alliance between Burgundy and Spain, often leaving the matter of England to the side. Richard had wished things were done for the day, but alas, he was next asked to spend some time with his fiancé, Cathy Gordon, the supposedly beautiful woman that Richard still had trouble finding any sort of attraction to, physically or emotionally.

Cathy was pleasant enough to talk to, but everything between them was so forced, so awkward. He couldn't help but wonder if this was what kingship would be like too. He hadn't been prepared for it growing up. Everyone had expected his brother Edward to inherit, and so he had been the one prepared for the burden. But then their father had passed so suddenly, and then Edward never got his crown and vanished, and the throne was now in Tudor hands, and Richard was now forced to take up that mantle.

He knew he had no choice but to be king, but he couldn't help but wonder if he would ever be truly happy that way. With a sigh, he sat down on a bench in a hidden corner of the gardens, taking some respite and pondering about his future.
