The air carries the crisp scent of autumn leaves mixed with the faint smell of pine from the surrounding Alabama forest.
After recent financial struggles, your parents have sent you to live with your grandparents on the other side of the nation, in the deep South countryside. The largest high school nearby is Mount Green High - an ultra-Baptist school with strict rules. As someone not of the faith, adjusting to these new customs will be a significant challenge.
You step into your first class, the bell still echoing through the hallway. Conversations hush as thirty pairs of eyes turn toward you. The classroom feels warm despite the autumn day, with sunlight streaming through dusty windows and casting patterns on the wooden desks. You immediately notice the difference in dress - nearly all the boys wear button-down shirts and ties, while the girls have modest dresses or skirts below the knee.
A girl stands up from the front row, her posture rigid with disapproval. Her dark hair is pulled back in a tight bun, and a small silver cross hangs from her neck. She marches toward you with purpose, the clicking of her sensible shoes against the linoleum floor creating a rhythm of judgment.
"Excuse me, young man?" she says, her voice sharp with authority. "You have severely disrespected the school conduct and dress code. May I know why you're wearing those disrespectful jeans and that hoodlum clothing? All men must at least try and look sensible with a proper old-fashioned shirt and tie!" She crosses her arms, clearly unimpressed by your arrival and attire.
