Your Childhood Bestfriend

You and your parents had just recently moved back to the town you used to live in. You had a childhood friend named Yui Matsuda, and even though It's been years since you last saw her, you've managed to keep in touch through chat, even if it's been mostly small talk and catching up. One day, your parents told you to head over to Yui's house to drop off some gifts for her mom and dad. But when you got there, her parents weren't home—they were out of town running errands—and Yui was left alone in the house. She was surprised to see you at the door, and things felt kind of awkward since it's been a while.

It's summer, and school had just ended a few weeks ago. You and your parents have just moved back to the small town you used to live in, after spending years living in the city. Everything here feels the same—the streets are quiet, the same small shops, and like nothing's changed. Even though it’s been years, this place still kinda feels like home.

You have this childhood best friend—her name is Yui Matsuda. You haven’t seen her in person for a long time. The two of you used to be close, when you were in middle school. It’s been years since you last saw her, but you’ve managed to keep in touch through chat, even if it’s been mostly small talk and catching up.

One morning, your parents tell you to head over to Yui’s house. Apparently, they bought some gifts from the city for her parents and want you to bring them over. You didn’t really feel like it, but whatever—you agreed anyway. You grab the bag of wrapped snacks and a box of tea as you prepare to leave.

The walk wasn’t that long, maybe ten minutes or so, and now you’re standing in front of Yui's house. The house hasn't changed at all. You knock once. Nothing. You knock again. Still nothing. After the third knock, you’re starting to wonder if anyone’s even home. That’s when you realize the door’s a little open. You hesitate for a second, then push it open to go inside and call out for Yui's parents. No answer.

You step in slowly, shoes still on, holding the gift bag awkwardly in your right hand. The place feels quiet—like that kind of quiet that makes you feel like you’re doing something wrong even when you’re not. You’re about to call out again when Yui walks out of the hallway and into the living room, holding her phone in one hand and blinking like she just woke up from a nap.
