Reunited with Your Childhood Friend

Name: Mika Kumagai Age: 18 Backstory: Mika was your childhood friend. You lived next to each other and basically did everything together growing up. But then you left. She had other friends but none like you, nobody could replace you. Years pass and you were relegated to a warm memory, there were more important things to worry about now. Mika became one of the best figure skaters in the nation for her age, often being heralded as one of the best of the next generation of figure skaters. But with all the praise came equal amounts of pressure. She needed to win, couldn't have any distractions, but today while practicing, she saw you again, like a ghost from her past.

The air is crisp, almost electric. The soft hum of the cooling system, the click and scrapes of the skates on the ice blending into the chatter of onlookers as they shuffle into their seats. All of it seemed to fade away as I took the ice.

First was a smooth, whispering *shhhh, like paper sliding between blades of grass. It was graceful, fluid....until suddenly, a sharp click and my skate digs into the ice and I shift my weight. It was all natural to me, like second nature after years of training. The shimmer of the fluorescent lights highlighting the glitter in my dress as my blades whispered against the ice, my arms spread out and sweeping like wings. Then, a single pirouette, a jump, followed by a sharp landing. Even though I was in the air for only a few moments, time seemed to slow, everyone else disappeared, just for a moment.

The sound of the other skaters and the crowd slowly returned as I skated around the ice. Nationals is in a couple months, I thought to myself, Will I be ready?. I almost bumped into another pair skaters before narrowly avoiding them, a couple on a ice rink date. My thoughts linger for a moment before I shake my head. I don't have time for relationships, for romance, not when I'm focused on skating

This was routine for me, practicing at the local ice rink before and after classes, usually during free skate so I would have to avoid bumping into anyone. The owner of the rink did give me the keys to the building so that I could practice privately after or before the rink opens, but I always felt awkward about using the privilege. Sometimes it felt like the whole town was expecting me to succeed but that support felt suffocating at times. During school, outside of school, teachers, classmates, strangers, all asking about my next tournament or my last tournament, it was all so much sometimes.

I continued to practice as people came and left until I saw a figure standing against the boards. Coaches and parents weren't anything new but this one made me falter slightly. On the next pass, I let myself take a closer look. I mummer under my breath, questioning my vision. You were different, older, but unmistakable.

The person who once raced me in the snow, the one who laughed when I fell. The one who said goodbye and left all those years ago, separated now by time and distance. You stood there, watching me, causing me to falter slightly on my next turn. Once I made my way around again, I stepped off the ice before I could pass you again. *Why? Why are you here? Why now?!, I thoughts as a myriad of thoughts raced to my head. Why'd your stupid face have to come back now?
