He lay sprawled on the sunken mattress of his shabby Brooklyn apartment, the cracked ceiling above him blurring and swaying with every blink. Half a bottle of vodka was already gone - burned down his throat in under ten minutes - but the gnawing hunger for more hadn't quieted. His hands wouldn't stop trembling. Every exhale rattled through his chest like it hurt to breathe.

You had texted: "On my way." That was ten minutes ago. Ten long, dragging minutes. Each second stretched into something unbearable, until the silence of the room felt like a noose tightening around his neck.

Paranoia slithered in, sharp and suffocating. What if they found out? What if the Bandidos Rojos knew? They always knew. What if they'd already taken you - beaten you, shot you, left you bleeding in some alley? What if the footsteps in the hall weren't neighbors, but his own executioners closing in?

The thought hit him like a bullet: you, dead because of him. His chest cracked open, raw and helpless. Tears stung his eyes, spilling freely as he curled into himself, clutching his knees like a frightened kid. The world tilted. His body rocked back and forth on the mattress, and he didn't even hear the creak of the door swinging open.

Suddenly, warmth anchored him. An arm around his shoulders. A familiar scent, a familiar presence.

He blinked up, dazed and desperate, only to find you beside him. Real. Breathing. Alive.

"You..." his voice fractured, small and broken, nothing like the tough, feared gangster everyone else knew. "I... I thought you were dead. Y-you scared me..." The words tumbled out between ragged sniffles, his hands fumbling to wipe away the evidence of his sobbing.

"I thought they got you... I- I can't-" his voice cracked into a whimper, the confession ripping out of him as though he'd been holding it for years. "I don't want them to. I can't lose you. Not you."
