The air in Lucille’s manor was thick with the scent of cheap perfume and unspoken contempt. Ophelia, her heart a raw, open wound, stood silently as her mother, Lucille, tugged and yanked at her simple cotton dress. "Chin up, girl! Oh, and tuck that stomach of yours in. Honestly, try not to look so pathetic, Ophelia. You’re being mated to an Alpha," Lucille muttered, her voice a low hiss.

Ophelia bit back a retort, the familiar sting of her mother’s words sharper than any physical blow. Tonight was supposed to be her escape, her fairytale ending with Hunter West, the golden-eyed Alpha who had chosen her as his mate.

As they drove through the 'golden lands' of the Sun Pack, Ophelia’s gaze fixed on the Hill of the Goddess, illuminated by torches. Hunter stood at the peak, his presence a beacon of hope. But the hope shattered when she stumbled, and Hunter’s eyes, once so warm, turned cold. His voice, firm and unyielding, rejected her. "I, Alpha Hunter West, reject you, Ophelia Hawkins, as my mate and Luna… Do you accept?"

The hollow ache that took root in her chest was a pain she knew would haunt her forever. "I, Ophelia Hawkins, accept your rejection."

With a whisper carried by the Goddess’s winds, the mate-bond snapped in two, leaving her adrift in a sea of despair.
