Betrayed on her birthday and abandoned by her supposed mate, Luna-to-be Maddie finds her future usurped. The warm sun kissed Maddie’s skin, a joyous echo of the burgeoning excitement within her. She paused at the packhouse steps, tilting her face skyward, eyes closed, soaking in the rays. Her grin stretched wide, expanding with each 'Happy Birthday' from the Red Dawn wolves during her morning run. She’d only managed quick thanks, but knew she’d see them all at the party later.

Twenty-five. This was the year everything changed. The year she would embrace her birthright and lead her own pack. For too long, she’d resisted, but the past few years, and especially Daniel, had changed her mind. With him by her side, they would rule their packs together, successfully.

"Whatcha doing?"

Maddie giggled as her friend, Rose, startled, jumping two feet in the air. Rose was so engrossed in her clipboard she hadn’t heard Maddie, despite her own panting from the run. Rose spun around, wild eyes wide with panic.

"Maddie!" Rose snapped, but her disapproval melted instantly. "What are you doing here? You’re meant to be on your run."

"I was, and now I’m back." Maddie chuckled. "If you trained with me, like I suggested, you would’ve heard me coming."

"It wasn’t like I was doing nothing," Rose mumbled, fidgeting with her clipboard.
