Dia de Los Muertos: Carlos Albino Sanchez

"Oh, I miss you so much. If only I could see you now...oh shit." Two years. It's been two years since Carlos had seen his beloved alive. Two years, his world had gone to shreds, since he had gotten murdered. And now, it's dia de los muertos, the day dedicated for him, and Carlos can't even make it a few hours without crying. But then, as if his day couldn't get worse, he makes himself known...unintentionally. Two years after losing the love of his life, Carlos struggles to celebrate Dia de Los Muertos. Overwhelmed by grief, he accidentally hits his head and suddenly sees his deceased partner's ghost. What follows is an emotional journey through love, loss, and the thin veil between life and death during Mexico's most cherished holiday.

It was a serene, quiet November afternoon. It was nice weather, even for people who were picky- not too hot, not too cold. But Carlos at the moment, was certainly NOT serene. The day had already started off, how he would call it, shit. Woke up 45 minutes late, forgot to feed Bruno, and now has to speed across the road to his parent's house. He had a bad night a few hours ago. He was practically dreading today, dia de los muertos, but he had hope. Maybe it would be better than last year, when he tripped over the marigolds and cried in the bathroom for an hour, all just to put up his partner's photo.Oh, how he missed him.Carlos missed everything about his partner. His voice, his touch, his smile..."Ay, Dios, focus!"He caught himself nearly about to swerve into opposing traffic. He was a mess. He couldn't think about him, not now. He would have to wait. Talk to his family, pray, eat, and hopefully the bathroom would be open.As Carlos turned into the driveway, watching his little cousins playing football in the yard, he felt a bit of...relief. At least that stayed the same. Putting on his signature "cool, older primo" smile, he grabbed the conchas out the backseat, unleashed Bruno, who already darted out the car door like a brown, furry tornado, and headed inside.

Dinner was...alright. Okay, maybe Carlos had to leave twice so he wouldn't have a panic attack, and maybe Bruno nearly stole his tia's tamale, but other than that, he was fine. Juuuuust fine. The ofrenda, adorned in all sorts of colors, was perfect. His eyes flicked around his childhood living room, especially where his boyfriend's picture was on the ofrenda. Now he just had to get through the nonstop chatter of his family, his sister Mia all over Bruno like a tick."Carlos? Estás escuchando?""Eh? Um, yeah."He nodded, turning back to his mother."Are you sure?"Okay, Carlos was a horrible liar, and everyone knows it. He just couldn't help it, there was too much on his mind. Like his partner's first and last dia de los muertos with him. How he kissed him at the door, when he held his hand, when Mia thought his partner was a supermodel, but who could blame her? His partner was gorgeous. Was so...Oh, no. Oh, no no no, don't do it. He couldn't. Blinking back some tears, he stood up abruptly."I'll be right back."He murmured, then ran to the bathroom before getting a response. Bruno noticed and followed suit, the retriever staying by his side like always. But it wasn't enough. He couldn't stand not being with him anymore. He just couldn't-THUD."Ay, joder!"Carlos didn't need to look up to know what happened. He just tripped on a damn carpet and hit his head, his dog sniffing curiously around him. His head throbbed like crazy, but instead of cursing the world, he...He started to cry.And that hurt more than his head. Today was just not right. It couldn't go right. And now Bruno started barking at nothing, like he always did."Que, Bruno? What do you want now..."His voice stopped and his face went pale as a ghost. But not as pale as..."Mi amor?"He called to the even more confused translucent man staring back at him.
