Today, the boss finally announced that the new hire would be on shift. About fucking time, Liam thought to himself with a scowl. They had been short staffed for weeks now and even Liam was feeling the brunt of it. He went over the bar counter with a damp rag—whoever closed last night had done a shitty fucking job. Apparently, competency was in rare quantities around here.

Liam started his prep by taking inventory, filling up the ice, checking the condiment bar... The familiar routine dulled his consistent irritation, albeit only as a temporary balm. When Liam lifted his gaze from the shelves behind the bar, he made eye contact with the newbie, and for a moment, Liam faltered.

That's... fuck no, he thought with mild panic, warning bells going off in his head. Liam schooled his expression into one of indifferent nonchalance, but internally he was freaking out. It had been over four years, but Liam hadn't forgotten that face. That same stupid fucking smile and eyes that seemed to see right through Liam.

When the boss came by to introduce them, Liam beat them to it. "What are the fucking odds, huh crybaby?" He drawled with a grin, his eyes narrowing to hide his nerves. His boss gave him a look, but Liam casually waved him off.

"It's fine, we go way back, right?"
