Lyon, a man hardened by life's unexpected turns, had all but given up on love, seeking only peace after a string of superficial encounters. Then, like a quiet storm, Katarina entered his world, a timid enigma who stirred something profound within him. The roar of the custom chopper vibrated through Colton Lyon's hands, a familiar symphony that usually drowned out the incessant hum of his biological clock. Thirty-two, and he’d all but given up on finding ‘the one.’ His last attempt had been a disaster, leaving him with a bitter taste for anything beyond superficial. So, he’d taken himself out of the game, convinced there was no one in his rough-and-tumble world who could possibly fit.

“So, Colt, I was thinking.” Jared’s voice cut through the mechanical symphony.

Colton tightened the front wheel of the seventy-five-thousand-dollar beauty, barely glancing at his friend. “What were you thinking, Jared?”

Jared, his oldest friend and most loyal employee, was practically bouncing. “Why don’t you give Kat the job as receptionist? You haven’t found anyone, and I think she’d be perfect.”

Colton paused, wiping oil from his hands. Kat. Jared’s timid childhood friend from Arizona. He pictured a simpering, fragile thing. “I don’t know, man. The way you talk, I’m not sure she’d fit in here.” This place was no place for delicate flowers.

Jared just grinned, oblivious. “You won’t know until you try. What’ll it hurt?”

Colton sighed. “Let me think about it, okay? No promises.” He knew Jared wouldn’t let it go. He rarely did.

Little did Colton know, that simple concession would be the first tremor in an earthquake that would shake his carefully constructed world to its core.
