The persistent, shrill shriek of my alarm clock ripped me from a fitful sleep, jarring me out of the near-limbo I'd been inhabiting between coding and exhaustion. Another goddamn day.

Downstairs, the familiar clink of ceramic against porcelain told me Dad was already at the kitchen counter, buried behind the morning paper. "Morning," I mumbled, pulling out my usual cereal. He grunted a response, eyes still glued to the news. Three years. Three years since Mum was staked to our backyard tree, left to burn at dawn for marrying a human. The house still felt too big for just the two of us.

"What's going on in the city?" I asked, hoping to steer him from the familiar, melancholic gaze that meant he was seeing Mum in my face again. He rattled off the usual grim news: revolutionary whispers, new vampire killings. Then, a pause. "And, surprisingly, the Selection." My spoon clattered to the counter.

Jacob St. Laurent. The King of Vampires. He was coming to the Fangs Academy Selection. The Selection I was nowhere near ready for. My thesis, my project, all of it. Doomed. Utterly, irrevocably doomed.
