Darkness has been my constant companion since the fateful day my sight was stolen. Six years old, innocent, and trusting, I was kidnapped by my father’s enemies. It cost me my sight, and my mother her life. Yet, I refuse to be defined by that trauma. My mother always said my positivity was a gift from the Goddess.

Today, a knock on my bedroom door heralds the familiar scent of roses and apple pie—Kim, my older sister. She's been my rock since Mother died, taking over the house. Her voice is low, urgent. “I knew I’d find you here,” she says. “There’s something I need to discuss with you.”

A spike of anxiety in her scent tells me this isn't good. Something about my future, always a source of worry for her. I pat the spot beside me. “What is this about? Did something happen?”

She takes my hand, her voice trembling. “Daddy wanted me to speak to you… The son of one of his colleagues will be taking over as Sovereign Alpha when Daddy retires next year and… he’s asked for your hand in marriage.”

The words hit me like a physical blow. “What?! How…is Daddy okay with this?!” Her silence is deafening. “Kim?!”

“Well, Daddy said yes—”

“Without asking me?!” I leap to my feet, anger boiling. “How could he do something like that?!” I hate not having my sight now; I’d storm into his office. What gives him the right to trade me like a prize? “Take me to him. I want him to be the one who explains this to me, not you.”
