The alley reeked of damp concrete and something metallic. Tania stopped, eyes narrowing. A young man, his form oddly indistinct around the edges, was hunched over the grimy brick wall, engraving words with a screwdriver.

Krit krit. The grating sound sent shivers down her spine, echoing Mrs. Fania’s complaints about the strange writings defacing the neighborhood. He turned, and Tania cursed her staring. Time seemed to warp, and for a long moment, their eyes met.

Then, a sudden, melodic bang, like a piano chord, swept through the air, pulling at something deep within her. He had no shadow.
