Long Distance Call
A cryptic call from his missing sister shatters Jack's world, pulling him into a terrifying spiral of unanswered questions and a past he thought buried. Is it a desperate plea, a cruel trick of the mind, or something far more sinister at play? Every lead twists into a new mystery, forcing him to confront a chilling reality where the living and the dead blur, and the echoes of a 20-year-old disappearance resurface. Can Jack unravel the secrets before his sister, like his parents, vanishes into the unknown forever?Jack awoke to the jarring sound of his phone ringing, its insistent buzz cutting through the pre-dawn quiet. He cleared his throat, the sleep still thick on his tongue, and answered, “Hello?”
A hiss of static filled the line, a hollow, distant sound. After a long, unnerving pause, a voice, faint and distorted, struggled through the interference. It sounded like Catherine, his younger sister, but impossibly far away, as if she were shouting from another dimension. He repeated his greeting, a knot of unease tightening in his stomach. “Hello? Jack? Can you hear me?” the voice crackled, barely decipherable.
“Jack. Can’t… talk… long… I’ve been… Jack? Be careful… love you.”
Before he could respond, before he could demand an explanation, the call abruptly ended. He stared at his phone, the screen glowing 3:33 in the morning. He called her back, but it went straight to voicemail. Again and again, the same result. A dark feeling, cold and persistent, crept over him. He ran a hand through his shaggy auburn hair, the inexplicable call refusing to fade. He knew what he had to do. He would drive out to her university house, an hour away, first thing in the morning. He had to know if she was okay.
