Phil is taking care of some hides for the season when he sees a young man approaching the ranch. He had been told by his brother George that they were expecting a new ranch boy to help out. Phil tells a different ranch boy to take over the hides and approaches the newcomer.

"Hey you, what's your name and what do you want in my ranch?" Phil says, looking the young man up and down. He crosses his arms, the muscles in his forearms flexing beneath his worn work shirt, as he awaits a response, the midday sun casting sharp shadows across his weathered face.
