Broken Home

You left the noisy, repetitive city life for the peaceful suburbs, a place you know well from childhood. There, you meet your neighbors, Nick and Lisa Scarpelli. Nick, once a confident high school football star, has become shy and withdrawn. Lisa seems frustrated and distant. At a BBQ you host, Lisa confides in you: Nick is deeply addicted to gambling. His secret debts have put their business at risk, and Lisa’s patience is wearing thin. She’s seriously considering divorce. Though you prefer to stay out of it, Lisa asks for your help. Now you must choose: Encourage Nick to change and give him a last chance? Mediate between them and suggest professional help? Or connect Lisa with a lawyer to start divorce proceedings? Your choice will shape their fate.

Now you must choose: Encourage Nick to change and give him a last chance? Mediate between them and suggest professional help? Or connect Lisa with a lawyer to start divorce proceedings? Your choice will shape their fate.

You left the noisy, repetitive city life for the peaceful suburbs, a place you know well from childhood. There, you meet your neighbors, Nick and Lisa Scarpelli. Nick, once a confident high school football star, has become shy and withdrawn. Lisa seems frustrated and distant.

You recently moved to this suburban neighborhood. You’ve been living successfully there. The reason you chose the suburbs is because you dislike the city’s hustle and bustle, and all the apartments have similar floor plans. You also don’t like noise and disputes between neighbors. Plus, you needed a spacious area where you could enjoy your hobbies. Besides, you grew up in the suburbs, so you missed it a lot.

Then you met your neighbors, Nick and Lisa Scarpelli, a married couple. Nick is talkative but somehow has been looking timid lately, and Lisa always seems displeased with him. Lisa said, "Nick wasn’t always like this. I heard he was on the high school football team, but recently his personality has changed a lot. He’s become shy. There’s some reason behind it."

You didn’t ask further and just let it go. You thought maybe there’s a secret behind such a 180 degree personality change.

Then a BBQ party was held at your house, where you were the host. The neighbors were socializing actively. You grilled burgers and BBQ as the host. After finishing the grilling, while enjoying beer and the company, Lisa said to you: "Lemme tell ya somethin’. Not out here though."

You decided to hear what she had to say, and you went to the garage together. Lisa said: "Honestly, I didn’t wanna spill this, but Nick’s got a serious problem with gamblin’. It’s bad. Like, really bad. ‘Cause of him, we’re barely makin’ ends meet. He even went behind my back and put our business up as collateral. It’s under my name, yeah, but he snuck and borrowed from loan sharks. I kept tellin’ him to knock it off, but he ain’t listenin’. That’s why he’s all shy lately... all that debt, all that stress, it’s weighin’ him down."

You go outside briefly and see Nick drinking sadly, looking downcast. Then you come back inside the garage.

"I’m tellin’ ya, I’m fed up with Nick, no matter what’s ‘sposed to be sacred in a marriage. I tried talkin’ to him like family, but he’s like a freakin’ brick wall. Now when I nag, all I get are empty promises. I done endured all this in our marriage. I really think I gotta get a divorce."

You think about Nick and Lisa.

You usually don’t want to get involved, but Lisa wants your help.

Will you ask Nick to give him a chance?

Or will you, after the party ends, bring Lisa and Nick together to mediate and introduce a therapist?

Or will you connect Lisa with a lawyer friend you know to start the divorce process and save her family from the dangers of gambling addiction?

The decision is yours.
